Brian_S
I won't bother updating my project thread anymore then! lol
Christ
wondered what you were on about but having checked the forum I see what you mean would have been nice to be told of the impending change. oh well, I'll be off as well then...... pat
must admit i was surprised to see projects in members only without a second matched topic in an open section , many non-members will also have projects they wish to show , ah well i,m sure its just an oversight for the hard working moderators & Admin to rectify
midasmesh
Must have been an error on an update or something as it is back in the open section. So come on lads get posting again lets see some updates.
greg
many non-members will also have projects they wish to show If they are spending the money on restoring/modifying or whatever their car then I'm sure they can find an additional £25 to join the OMOC. Which will give them more than just access to the forum.
Leon
If they are spending the money on restoring/modifying or whatever their car then I'm sure they can find an additional £25 to join the OMOC. Which will give them more than just access to the forum. Whilst I agree Greg, I don't think the forum "lockdown" has been carried out in a particularly brilliant fashion. No email warning, no Announcement sticky advising of the impending changes - just wham-bam bye bye 60% of the open forums when you wake up one morning. If the club wanted a recruitment drive there are much better ways of doing it. Why not send a mailshot to forum regulars advising them that the forum is soon to go largely private and why not join the club to continue having access, ideal a time to join as any? Or why not publicise club membership more - many people are not really the club member type, and if club benefits aren't constantly shoved under their noses they may never realise what it can offer them. If the club is great then tell people why and they might consider joining. I can't see any other reason for making more sections private than a lack of members paying to join the club. If this is the case, then you need to make offer extra incentives to join, not withdraw access to previously free privelages. Performing the equivalent of an "it's my ball and I'm taking it home" operation just snubs non members and gives them no incentive to join. The majority will just vote with their feet and post elsewhere, they won't suddenly all stump up £25 to enjoy what was previously free and enjoyed by all. Mods/management - please don't take this as a rant, it really isn't intended as such, and I could be wrong on a number of points - I just think there would have been better ways of handling the situation. greg
Think a big part of the change was to try and stop some of the bickering that has been going on of late.
pat
greg my point is only that we will have people who either live well outside the uk who are passing through & wish to show those in other nations how their cars have been restored / modified they would find little or no return on their money if they joined but at the same time they may have skills , talents & ideas that we have not seen before & would give us new ideas that just may keep our cars on the road longer with less effort, also there are many who may live within the clubs usual borders who are not members who for whatever reason may not wish to be at present , but still have skills & ideas which are useful or inspirational to many , case in point take a look at the work Phil (mantadoc) has done himself fabricating & repairing his manta & his wife's kadett . Mantadoc is now a valued member but most of those skill & mods he can advise on were learned & honed long before he joined this forum , are these the kind of skills & knowledge you would be happy to lock out ? not having a pop just asking. I will hold my hands up & admit my wife & i are not paying members at the moment but did pay our subs for 14 years & a number of those as area reps with & after Sean Hunt , we may rejoin soon(assuming we are still welcome ) who knows . If you read my post again i stated that i have no issue with having a members only projects section (but assumed it was merely an oversight or yet to be finished alteration which would also see a suitable area for others (non members) to post theirs too , not saying i'm right just my point of view which imho is no more valid than yours
0peli400
i think the powers that be are doing this all wrong, do they really think that making most of the forum for members only will make me rejoin...NO! if they are doing it to stop all the bitching then that is the wrong way too, if they want to stop the trouble makers they should just BAN THEM. in fact hey, just make the whole forum for members only and see how long the club lasts. pat
I think it's time to chillax , at the end of the day we have no knowledge of why any changes occured , the admin do their best under damned if you do , damned if you dont conditions , its the season of GOODWILL folks lets not get people who do a pretty essential job disheartened at what is their hobby too , they have to do what they do in their free time . Christ
Hmmm.... I see the project section is back but what about all the rest? I know not being a member my views are not important but a basic tech section to 'help get your new purchase going'???? What's to stop a non-member posting a quite technical question and non-member replying? Or do the mods now have to police that section removing anything more than asking how to replace a light bulb? Looks like I'm going to have to pay my membership then - oh no, wait a minute, there's a link to another site at the top of the page that can answer all my questions for free OMOC website see ya
Rick-Manta
Well I'm a paying club member and I can never be bothered to type in the password (whatever it is now?!) into the club only sections, each time I want to look at a different topic area. I always post any technical questions in the open one not the club one as I'd rather get any info I need from anyone that could possibly help. Well at least the projects is back, chances are it was just experimental. Has there been any bickering on the projects? I thought that was the most easy going section as all you can really post is 'that's nice', 'I like what you did there' or 'how did you do that'. keith1200
slightly off-topic here But it has a point in relation to this thread! Did anyone read the Morris Marina site of late? There was a lot of bitching/rants and personal attacks (verbal) etc related to the top-gear program. The thread has now been deleted now BUT the bitching on this site in comparison; is like an disagreement on what hyms the choirus should sing in church on sunday. Maybe the social aspect of the club should be 'members only'? I've already had my wee rant (2 warnings) about some aspects of the new set-up. I do however, kinda like the new setup of threads etc BUT it's still experimental so I'm not going to moan about it yet give me time and a few
rutts
why did the club not send e-mails out about this? we/you are the club there is no club without all of us, what must be understood is just a handfull of persons take on the hassle of trying to keep everyone together and enjoy meetings throughout the country with other car mad nutters who love opels/vauxhalls whether manta, ascona, kadett, chevette and cavalier more if you wish. Just think if all commitee and area reps just said at the AGM 1 months notice we are folding the club unless 6 people come forward NOW to run THE CLUB, sort out all membership collection post mag four times a year meet up every quarter to sort out any major issues sort out web site and forum issues, give your time and effort for FREE how many of us would take this on? not enough i dont think before the gun is jumped again lets wait and see what happens. Pat welcome back with open arms, i miss your laughing at shows. you and the misses manta through and through this is my opinion always look positive

johnw
If I may offer an "outsiders" opinion... I live in Cape Town, South Africa, I have an A series that my grampa gave to me about 14 years ago, I was getting loads of info that I really could not get here in SA. It was incredibly helpful, I say was because of course I never wrote anything down, I would just go back to the technical section and read the posts again... I understand that it takes time and money to run the site, but it would be really really cool if we could go back to the way it was. I also understand that my opinion as a non-member living on the other side of the world is probably not as important as most people on here, so feel free to ignore me. I reckon I'll still check back on here everynow and then, but if it stays like this, I'll have to look around on other sites for help. cheers J
