Not Quite As Described

Recommended Posts

Had a look at this car the other day as it was described as being solid ( :) ) and in the first 5 mins found a hole under the water bottle, hole by the battery tray, hole on the drivers sill near the rear wheel arch and both a pillars holed, also it has had a weld on the passenger chassis rail (overlaid patch not a cut out) and there is a hole on that rail near the patch, it has just been missed. If you are looking at it then just be a bit carefull as its not quite as described. :thumbup

Thanks for the warning there, well spotted.

The trouble is most sellers don't comprehend rust in places you can't see. A solid car to those without a true interest in cars is one that has no or little rust on the external panels, let's face it NO manta that hasn't been either restored or parked in a heated garage and not seen rain is going to be solid. Last time I were at Billing in my early B, many commented on how 'solid' it looked, with the front end now fully stripped I've so far got through a square metre in sheet steel and I need a new nosecone for it!!

I take it you said to the seller you've found a coupe of holes? He hasn't bothered to edit his description accordingly which is a bit naughty!

They can always look pretty on the outside but as you rightly said its what is on the INSIDE that counts. He was there when I was going round it and I pointed it all out to him. He even went on to say that he was 'rather pleased' with the underneath! . The advert has been listed by a friend of his so unless his friend changes it on his say so then it will just stay as is, not fair really cos someone will buy it expecting to have a solid car and its not.

My Manta was the same, it looked superb on the outside but when I started digging :o ............! there is a ne nosecone on the German Ebay or at least was up untill a few days ago, I will see if I can find it.

It's fair to pointout that, coupe sheds normally exchage hands for anywhere between 1k-2k.

It's not a exclusive so , kinda seems to be sitting at the expected market value for this condition/model/colour.

The point I was trying to make was more about its description rather than the actual price. Haveing been a previous omoc member for over 10 years I have had many a dealing with many a car, and, yes your right it is about on the money but if it has rot in it then it the ad should reflect that along with the price. If I lived in Scotland and travelled to buy this Manta I wouldnt be to impressed to see the rot in it after expecting a solid shell, but then I guess those are the risks you take buying on Flea-Bay,rough with the smooth and all that...... :thumbup

Don't get me wrong! It sounds like a heap to me, going by your earlier post! personally, I would pay more the £300-£400 for it BUT

there's lots of morons out there with more money than sense, thus the going price for coupe sheds is; £1k-£2 no matter what the add says.

I know I am slightly off the original topic here, but in this thread it is mentioned that no manta is going to be solid or NO rot.

I don't know, I have one thats awefully close. Nose cone, inner sills, inner wings all very good. Still wearing some original paint on body as well, back arch lips haven't even swelled at all.

Yeah your right :thumbup someone's light rust, needing a bit of welding and a rub-doon, is some else's shed ;)

Anyhow, there's people out there, who don't really care if it's rotten or not! why? because it will get welded-up/400 kit/red-top

then they'll be out rallying in it ;) Manta's are still cheaper than escort Mk1/2's 'Simple' ;)
