matt24680 Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 hi guys my manta wont start and when i use easy start it starts for a second so it something to do with fueling i suspect the fuel pump as i cant hear it am i right in saying its a mechanical pump on the side of the head and not electric so no relay? please help:( Quote
spiney_norman Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 First of all, which engine's in the car? Is it the 1800 Family II type or the 2.0 cam in head type as found in the GTEs? If you're using easy start I'm assuming it's on a carb? If it's a carbed engine then you won't be able to hear the pump as it's a mechanical one. Quote
matt24680 Posted September 30, 2010 Author Posted September 30, 2010 no its the cih 2.0 gte one and it starts with easy start through the air intake so should i hear the pump when i turn ignition on but dont turn the engine? Quote
cam.in.head Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 no. the pump only runs when starter is operated or once the engine is actually running. you can check this by removing small wire from starter motor then turning key to start position.engine wont turn over because you have removed the wire but fuel pump (under rear, near tank) should run. if not check fuse in fusebox in car is ok .this should go 12v as you operate key. Mrbus Posted September 30, 2010 Posted September 30, 2010 I had this problem. I spent £25 on a 2nd hand 7 pin relay that sits on the o/s inner wing. Fitted that but still didnt start. In the end it was a loose connection in fuse number 7 me thinks. To get it going at 1st I just stuck a penny in the terminals to bridge it. That was on my GTE not so long ago. If you switch the ignition on, then bridge the fuse box the pump will run so you should hear it. Quote
midasmesh Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 Usally when you turn the ignition on you hear the pump kick in for a second, you can hear if it kicks in better if you have the door open. The pump on a hatch is by the back of the fuel tank, if you look under the car from the drivers side in front of the back wheel it is tucked up the back of the fuel tank. As said it could be a fuse connection or the fuel injection relay mounted just behind the airflow meter a little balck plug (box), or the pump, but also could be where the wires connect to the pump as these can corode sometimes. matt24680 Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 hi guys thanks for the reply i put a penny between fuse number 7 and 8 and it started no bother so does that mean get a new relay ? Quote
garymanc Posted October 1, 2010 Posted October 1, 2010 hi guys thanks for the reply i put a penny between fuse number 7 and 8 and it started no bother so does that mean get a new relay ? yes new relay needed ..... even though you should have used a 2p tight wad Quote
matt24680 Posted October 1, 2010 Author Posted October 1, 2010 hi there my mistake i did use a 2p thanks for all the help guys Quote

Quote
midasmesh Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Not sure if theres a mod but as far as i was aware the pump kicks in for a breif second to pressurise the fuel injection lines ready for turning the engine over. Quote
Lundgren_85 Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 You´r right, it´s pressurising the system in the step before start. You can see the volt meter dip for a few seconds and then go up too current volt status. Quote
Quarter-Life-Crisis Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 I've got the same problem, On my previous manta there was a second where the pump kicked in before i started the engine. I bought a new relay, made no difference. I have to do the 2p trick, its bloody annoying and doesn't look very good. I mentioned it before somewhere - my 33 year old v6 carbed auto mk1 granada does not have starting problems at all, even when stood for 6 months i just pump the throttle a few times and it strikes then idles lovely. German reliable fuel injection eh! May look into the loose connection thing though. Just don't know how to prime the fuel pump for that second to get the fuel bled! Non regular starting may be the problem? if its used daily on a good run it may do it some good? Quote
