Manta Losing Coolant When Heater Is On

Can someone please explain what is happening and how to fix it?

Manta 1.8s Berlinetta (1983) 70,000 miles.

When driving with heater off temp showing mid way on gauge and does not appear to be losing coolant :-)

When driving with heater on temp gauge rises rapidly towards the red zone and lost 3 pints of coolant on 6 mile trip! :-(

Does this sound like a head gasket is required or something to do with the heater matrix? or something else?

I can not find any wet areas in or under the car.

Anyone any experience with K-Seal?

Thanks in anticipation

Dave

HI MATE YOU COULD DO A COMPLETE RADIATOR FLUSH TO GET RID OF CORRISION , ANY SINE OF BUBBLES OR OIL IN THE RADIATOR WHEN THE CAR IS TICKING OVER ? HEAD GASKET ??. ANY SINE OF WATER IN THE ENGINE ?.MANTAS ARE KNOWN FOR HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE GAUGES DUE TO THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR AS WELL , YOU COULD CHANGE THE THERMASTAT , POSS DO A COPLETE REVERSE FLUSH ASWELL. MAKING SURE YOU HAVE NO AIR LOCKS.CAN YOU WIRE IN A ELECTRIC FAN ?. HOPE THIS HELPS CHEERS STEVE

Thanks for the advice

No sign of bubbles or oil in the radiator on tickover.

No obvious sign of water in the engine oil/rocker cover.

would like to know where the 3 pints of coolant went!

Will have a go at back flushing radiator tomorrow.

Cheers

A faulty or the wrong pressure rad cap will cause the coolant, when under pressure, to be pumped out through the rad overflow, you wouldn't see it anywhere as it will have been blown away as the car is travelling. Just a thought :thumbup

water pump can leak intemitently ,

try a thermostat that opens at a lower temp like 82 (i think its from an audi 80) less likely to get stuck closed.

if you have no rad cowling left to direct the air that wont help .

a loose or slipping fan belt when the alternator is under load from the heater fan... perhaps ?!?

ive used Kseal quite alot in work and we reccomend it. it will fix a leak and even a head gasket on a rover for a while.
