H
hi all i had a replacement box put in by my local mechanics after a period off the road ... the old box had seized in reverse ... the new ones fine except the speedometer was not attached to the drive ... my mechanic is trying to get the back plate off the old box to work out how to connect but cant ... perhaps because it has seized in gear ... hes asked me to post this !!! anyone offer any ideas how to a.) remove the cover in this situation or b.) how to get the 'worm drive' as he described it out of the old box another way so the speedo on the new box can be connected to it ... hope that makes sense ... thanks all
johnboy
You have to strip the box from the bell housing back, quite a big job, the speedo worm drive is kept in place by a sprung steel clip that can break, if this happens the worm gear moves down the shaft towards the prop, there is a post on here somewhere telling you how to put a clip in but it is really fiddly but doable. paulmanta
If you are stripping the old box down you need to put the back half of the gearbox in a bucket of very hot water for 5 mins, then the case expands and the back will pop off the shafts inside. You can put the plastic drive cog back on via the speedo drive hole and the propshaft hole, the gap at the prop end in big enough to poke a long plastic rod up to push the drive cog back in place, you can put the new spring steel clip on a flat screwdriver with a nub of grease and then use it and the plastic rod up the prop hole to push it in its groove till it goes click. .
