Manta B Rear Irmscher Bumper

The bumpers are the same as far as I've ever seen but the inner mounting has different metal work as the hatch back panel holes are in different places.

Some people say they have seen a more rounded shape for the hatch but I've never put them side by side and if I wanted to put an irmscher rear bumper on I've just put the mounts on to suit.

The above is fitted as standard to the exclusive hatch and coupe.

good to know, we have an irmscher rear bumper here (Dirks Coupe Stock fro Germany) will pull it out and try it on mine,

I just thought the bumpers would be different what with the rear panel being wider on the hatch

if it fits its going on my hatch!

ive got one on my hatch , it does fit , but you need to drill a few holes ,dont over tighten the end studs as it distorts its shape .lock 2 nuts together .

you might then need the infill for between the rear lights .

also its a bit of a squeeze to fit the number plate wiring as it has 3 lights and no space for standard terminals to go .

get a red bulb and swop the fog light wire into the right reverse light , save having that ugly after thought one hanging down .

Just to add a note to the above too for Derek.

The hatch and coupe rear infills are different with the distinguishing thing being the hatch one has small notches in the ends to allow for the bulge in the ends of the middle of the rear panel.

Just to add to kev's post (hope you don't mind kev) the hatch infill panel is slightly longer, and if you need one Derek, i have a couple here, some with the irmscher sticker added.

No mate, it's all part of the knowledge base ;)

Gary says He has one without lights, I'll bet LEDS can be fitted easy enough or as I did fitted Fiat uno ones

yeah I will grab that as the one we have here is for a coupe, was thinking of getting one custom made but if yours are within budget that will work

I can get my aunty to add it to her bag, she loves me and car parts, so just to Northfield and save some postage

I would be interested to know if these were available for the hatchback, the coupe being narrower at the rear

It's the other way round, the hatch is narrower than the coupe! I ave a bumper off my old hatch and it's too short to fit on my coupe. I know this cos I have tried to fit it. Removed all the mounts, swopped this and that and still too short!

Uh oh. If you're 100% on that Kev then I hope I haven't sold all my fecking coupe ones!!

jeeez this is confusing, I need to get the bumper out to check now.

I know the rear panel on the hatch is wider buy about 2 inches, the difference is between the tail lights, adding overall width to the rear panel, I have both coupe and hatch panels here side by side and the coupe rear panle will not fit the hatch as its not wide enough. I was thinking because the rear panel is wider then this must be transfered into the overall width the bumper needs to cover

looking at Dirks coupe sitting in my garage Its very hard to tell where the differences are in the bumper and rear wings but I will pull the bumper out of the loft and check.

but in the meantime, here is a photo of the two rear panels side by side

the one on the left wrapped in bubble wrap is a NOS GM original rear panel for a coupe, the red one on the right is for a hatch (sent over by Kevin Abbott)

mmm

distance between tail lights on hatch is wider than the coupe

rear panel on the coupe is wider

tail lights are the same width on both cars

so if the bumpers cover the same with on coupe and hatch, where is the extra width of the rear panel lost?

Sorry the car is so dusty, we have had a lot of high winds and crap weather the past month or so and this car hasn't turned a wheel in a while

He he I love this stuff. All of us going all anal over the width of a bumper ;-)

Train spotters the lot of us.

I'm still adamant they are the same size until I'm proven or I can prove myself wrong.

If one is smaller than the other then I can use the smaller one to improve the ' tuck' ala chip foose pulling bumpers into the cars lines.

yeah your right Kevin, bunch of Manta freaks to be sure.

but (and there is always a but) it would be bloody handy if we had a technical section that had pinned info on this and the likes of quad headlights

I think you did an article on the electric power steering conversion, would be good to have a "how to" on most of the common cook book problems like how to fit front fog lights in a non fog light car, front and rear brake conversions, there is a pretty big list of things that are hard to get real good detail info on. And for what its worth all that info should be in a members only section.

sorry for kind of taking this thread off track, maybe we could get a fresh one going, its just that if the guy up top is looking for a irmscher bumper its probably best to make sure its gonna fit his car.

from back in the day when you would repair a manta after a rear end smash I'm sure the rear bumper would come as a kit from Irmscher with all the rear light and brackets etc and there was one set for the hatch in the box and another set for the coupe.but the actual bumper was the same. Something tells me you had to cut the end fixing brackets off the quarters and drill holes for the end fixing of the bumper there were two different lenght threaded aluminium spacers to hold the ends of the bumper. On the coupe it would use the orginal end fixing holes.
