Hi all, I am in urgent need of the two inner wings for a Manta B rally car.

We are also looking for information on strengthening the damper turrets as the turret on the nearside ripped apart on the rally today.

The items are for Crookboy of the forum.

Kind Regards Rob

The old way of doing it was to double skin a second turret from above to strengthen the area so the damper didn't punch through.

Personally i'd also add some strengtheners under the wing from the chassis rail up, like the mk2 escort uses

I have a pair of the turrrets cut from the inner wings, and i have a full inner wing but can't remember which side or how good/bad it is.

Will have a look when i'm at the unit tomorrow and let you know

Holy shit! I've seam welded mine inside and out and the top has a band welded over it to stop the shocker punching through. I've no idea what's happened there though it doesn't look rotten in the slightest. Has the shocker seized? Maybe a stress fracture from years of abuse but the car has just been rebuilt so you'd think someone would have noticed if it was cracked!!

if your passing this way mate ive got some inner wing sections that would cover that

Thanks to all for replies and help including Derek Smith NZ (via facebook)

Pat I am on afternoons this week 1300 - 2300 Mon - Thur, so will have to make arrangements.

Simon is from Stafford so I can get him to hook up with you on purchases if req'd.

I appreciate all help and info on this and please continue to add info on spares as body parts are always appreciated.

Kindest Regards to all

Rob

Very interesting that it went there.... I would have expected the failure seam to occur closer to the stress concentration. Interesting. (sorry, that's no help to you I know! - just interesting from an engineering point of view)

In Crookboys post in the other section he says there was no clues or cracks it just tore the metal apart. The force needed to tear that apart is huge considering it only takes the shocker and not a McPherson strut like an escort. Is it possible that the bump stop cone has collapsed (or been shortened) allowing the shocker to bottom out? Just a thought I know it's no consolation but I know I'd be gutted if after it's repaired it happened again.

You'd be surprised how much force loading a damper unit can apply under reaction to a violent bump (damper force is proportional to velocity), that said, to inflict that damage upon a good previously unfatigued panel is very odd. As you say it could be that the bump stops have been shortened and thus the damper locked out, doesn't explain where the fracture occured but would explain how. If I hadn't seen that picture I would have put money on (supposing the turret had been seam welded - as it has) the damper rod punching through the bush where the stress is concentrated.

You rallying now Rob?

I am assisting as service crew for the Crookboys Rallying. I help with parts location and tech assistance via the club.

I will need to lose considerable weight.....LOL.... to take part in the rallying scene.

I did manage to squeeze my large frame in to the co driver seat on the test area, for my first time in a rally car, loved it.

Hi all thx for all the views we remain puzzled. Damper not seized and watching in car footage there wasn't any significant impact. The car shell was re prepped in 2007/8 and has only been used on flat smooth Tarmac as far as I can tell so unlikely to be subject to same loads. The crack appears to have started near the chassis rail and I suspect through further loads just opened up wider and wider. I felt that the car was a little bit strange mid the last stage and we slowed a bit but then decided it was nothing serious - it can be difficult to spot when in mud, loose gravel and bumpy! I'm stripping and cleaning the car today so some more may be revealed and I will give the points raised serious attention. Will also scrutinise the drivers side.

Derek please would you forward a contact number please

Thx everyone appreciate the help

Cheers Simon

Never seen damage like that on any of my manta's and have done plenty of rallying in them too...Especially as I use coilovers on the front.

How come you have have managed to get away with the cage going through to the front struts!
