thought i would share my experience of discovering rust in the chassis legs of a Manta B.

may be helpful for anyone looking at a Manta and knowing what to look for.

this car was a near new import to New Zealand and you may find its not as bad as some others of the same era.

the shell looked mint until it was media blasted.

perhaps others can share their chassis leg nightmares?

All done in my shed.

There are other repair options for the Manta, I chose to do this one as it was the easiest one for me in NZ.

Everyone has an opinion on this subject, I am only posting this to share my experience after finding it very hard to find any decent information

I hope this helps anyone worried about a chassis leg repair and simply needing to see what can be done.

Yours weren't too bad but it shows that a small amount of rust breaking through hides loads of corrosion behind the scenes. Patching would never remove that and it would continue to rust and blow through in the future.

Your repair has got all of the rust out and will stop it for good.

Nice work

yep nice work, and as James said, that rail was probably better than most others I have seen, even on dry stored very low miles cars! They all pretty much started to rot as they left the factory.

Excellent photographs Derek, and a very instructive post. Why don't you write a book on this subject, you have more or less done that on these pages!

Mantasport swears by those repair panels but I have never worked with them. They are a good option or Eckahrd produces full inner and outer rails but it depends on how bad the corrosion is

Replacement panels are the way to go, bit hard for me in New Zealand, but that's what I get for being on the arse end of the planet where very few know what a manta is.

Hi Guys,

For those who have chopped out the chassis rails like this - I didn't see any bracing of the car before chassis rail removal.

Does the rest of the structure support itself ok with no worries about alignment afterwards, even when the car is on a spit?

I discovered a crack on one of my rails due to rust pushing out from the inside so think I may go this route.

Cheers

Roger
