Ems Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 I've noticed there's some movement up and down on the drivers side door. It's had new hinge pins fitted but the play seems to be in the door itself. Is this something that can be sorted? Thanks Quote
paulmanta Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 No, the door welds might have gone slack and it has movement, I tried to fix this on my hatch and never managed to improve it. You could remove the door and try to get access to the hinge welds but they are quite deep in the door and it would take too long, cheaper to source a new door ! Quote
Ems Posted February 9, 2014 Author Posted February 9, 2014 Typical as it's already been painted! Quote
paulmanta Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 At least you ought to be able to match the paint then, I tried when I replaced mine but because the rest of the car was original the new door stuck out like a sore thumb. Its probably the bottom hinge, welds gone loose. you could try and get it drilled and plugged and hope for the best but the construction of the door makes it quite hard to do, the outer skin in in the shut/hinge area is not what the hinge welds to, it welds to the frame inside if you tack weld the hinge to the outer skin it will just break off again. This is just my observation. try by all means. First get the door fitted and get a mate to wiggle the door up and down a bit while you look at the hinges. find out which one is giving trouble. Quote
lamchop77 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 More than likely that the hinge pin holes are ovalled with wear. I had this on my coupe, fixed it by drilling and reaming out the hinges to take solid morris minor hinge pins. 1 Quote

Berlinetta Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 My '78 Coupe has 'play' in the drivers door. Is it worthwhile fitting new hinge pins? ...or is it always the case that the hinges need to be reamed-out - and larger hinge pins fitted - to cure the problem? Quote
MANTAMAN Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Try new hinge pins first, they are not expensive, just a bit of a pain to extract. Quote
Berlinetta Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 Cheers. Will try the new pins. Just spotted a good deal on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turbolzen-Satze-Manta-B-Ascona-B-vorne-OHV-GTE-CIH-neu-OPEL-/121744948456?hash=item1c58907ce8:g:IvMAAOxyzi9Si3Xg Quote

Berlinetta Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 Just tried my Opel dealership for the pins .... €8 (c.£5) for the set of 4 (Vectra) pins ! Happy days! Quote

When you have spent a day taking the skin of your knuckles with a lump hammer trying to remove the old pins the day won't be so happy !! 1 Quote
