Dougs
Hello everyone Thought i would try and start a thread on my rebuild but im a bit of a technophob so was wondering if someone could tell me how to put up pics. i know this has been covered but im just a bit slow when it comes tae computers. could i take pics off the wifes facebook page? Anyway bought the car off ebay about a year ago and ive been welding ever since! wasnt that bad really. so stripped the car right back but left the engine and box in as it fired up briefly before the belt snapped. think im going to leave them in for now as i dont want this to turn into one of those endless projects having just finished a 4 year classic boat refurb. Most of the welding is done now and its pretty much back to being mechanically sound with new seals bushes and bearings in axle and torque tube, all new brake lines and master cylinder, new shocks at rear and lowering springs from lenk tunning although i dont know if im happy with them as it seems to be sitting too high at the back new wheel bearings and lots of other wee bits and bobs Had the car out yesterday for a blast on the farm road and cant stop grinning i loved my first taste of a manta! the back end twitching all over the place and was pleasantly surprised by the engine which felt pretty liveley.looking at the paperwork ive got for the car its a 1.9 block which has been rebored with pistons, rings and big end bearings in 1991 then the car was taken off the road in 1993. its a 2.0 head with a op214 kent cam and followers running a 32/36 dgav weber carb. was looking for info on setting the timing Plan for the car is standard bodywork with the front spoiler and thinking of a satin black finish with chrome details for that american muscle car look and a bespoke interior

611
Hey Doug, glad you like the progress on the car ;-) i have neglected it a bit this summer as had loads of work on and DIY to do, but am getting back on it now. The lights are great, and work a treat and are a perfect fit, its just the mounting brackets that are a bit tricky. I havent finished them yet but started a mockup that is a mix of the old backing plate and part of the BWM plastic backing and plan to have them spun out of a sheet of metal. I have a local company to me that does the spinning and they did the fuel tank funnel that the pump fits in. They can make quite intricate shapes. As soon as i have the exhaust finished i will crack on and get them done so if your not in a rush and can hang on for a couple of months then i should be able to show you how they should all fit together. I will try and post the mockup over the next few days. Looks like you have a bit to keep you busy with yours :-) If you ever need any help, just give me a shout as i have replaced most parts on mine now, so hve managed to fit a lot of places to get bits from!! Dougs
Cheers Andy, in no rush for the lights so would be good to see how you get on with them and thanks for the offer of help im pretty sure you will regret saying that
Dougs
here is some welding pics although i seem to have lost someThese bits were a nightmare to weld around the windscreen. Its maybe not the best welding in the world but its solid and im pretty happy with myself here is some paint pics although some are pretty rubbish qaulity only a couple worth a look cos of my crappy camera The axle and torque tube with new seals, bearings, uprated bushes and doughnut Back on the car woohoo Thats about all i can find for now
611
Hey Dough Its looking good on the welding side, its the one bit i hate!! No problem with the help. i wish there was as much info about when i started mine. Its was quite hard to get bits, but now its much easier. I think i have tracked down most of the parts you need over time :-) mine is used as i bit of a "i wonder if i could do that to it" kind of restore, so lots of little one off things being made, like the lights!! I have to wait a few weeks for the exhaust to be made now so i might have a look at those lights next week ;-) So i will get some updates on my blog. Dougs
Cheers Andy, think I have most parts now as the car came with loads of spares and the rest from lenk tunning and eBay but will probably be looking for stuff when she goes back together. Must say I'm happy the welding is nearly done as its the one thing I've never done before. Just the doors to finish now but I handed them off to my bro he's a full time welder Getting her prepped for paint now haven't done that for 10 years either but I like doing things myself. Thinking of satin black ever seen an a done like that before? Dougs
Dougs
Sorting out shut lines which has proved a fair old battle and some pics of the doors couldnt find pics showing the worst of the rust but as you can see rust on the outside tou get the picture she gets out the shed for the first time in a year and took her for a blast. spent some time recently setting up timing and the carb. getting massive wheelspin even in third which im hoping is because of the lack of weight in the car right now and the crap old tyres not to happy with the height of the car with new springs but again hoping its the lack of weight in the car brakes are all finished back to original spec with rebuilt calipers all new lines and a master cylinder that was the wrong one but after some work got it to work well. Had some pics of this but my phone made them disapear. brakes lock up to quick which i think is the crap tyres again with my apprentice The height is supposed to be 40mm lower but this seems even higher than standard. i know it will settle a bit with time and theres a lot of weight to go back on the car so will prob reserve judgment till then getting there

Dougs
still waiting on my doors, my brothers flat out right now and there proving to be a tricky fix. really starting to hold the build up now!! So i have turned to the engine work now. my plan is to do what i have to to get it on the road this year then think about upgrades after that it was running a bit rough and ther was petrol in the oil so i rebuilt the weber 32/36 carb (in the living room. didnt go down to well) sorted out some duff fuel lines and blew out all lines, put in an in line filter, changed gasket on manifolds, swapped carb bolts for threaded rods which pulls down a lot better and renewed ignition stuff like points, condenser, rotor cap, leads and still to get plugs fired up and runs really good although not a good idle when cold. i have now discovered there is no fast idle lever on the carb for some reason will probably have enough bits to heath robinson this up though did a compression test and worryingly was only getting around 4.5 bar. from working out the ratio i thought it should be around 9. maybe my tester is faulty because the car fires up instantly and felt pretty lively also when turnig engine by hand it feels like there is plenty compression. it was a cheap tester and i am not a mechanic any thoughts? nicgm
Looking good mate, and spoiler really suits the shape of the A Series. Have you picked your wheels yet?
Dougs
Was thinking rota zeros or calibre vice in a 15 x 7 would give it a kind of similar style as the rostyles. Also like wolfrace slots, something old school. But as usual it all comes down tae the pennies
Dougs
Got some primer on the car, tired of waiting for my doors. Need to get back into spraying anyway as its been a while. Never sprayed with cellulose before either struggled to get it to atomise properly think ill need tae thin it more next time but a good couple of guide coats for taking out the imperfections
