1.6 Back Axle

Hi folks,

Advertised for a 1.9 axle a bit back but nobody had one.  Suddenly occurred to me that 1.6 and 1.9 both had the same ratio of 3.67:1 if memory serves me right.

So, anyone got a 1.6 Manta/Cavalier axle in good working order?

1.6S has the same axle as the 1.9 but the 1.6N which I'm not sure we ever got over here had the smaller axle. The 1.6, 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 auto are all 3.67, 2.0 manual is 3.44.

*grabs anorak, exits stage left*

OK, thank you "Norman".

So I'l rephrase my request ....

Anyone got a 1.6S, 1.8, 1.9 manual, or 2.0 Auto back axle in good nick that they would like to flog to me ....??

Please?  Before mine finally conks out completely....

I have a 1.8 axle. But I would have to swap it for a 2L axle.

Thanks

Is your pinion bearing starting to collapse?

I suspect so.  Began with a faint rumble that couldn't be pinned down but wasn't coming from the wheel bearings.  Has built to an 'orrible noise that rises to ear-wearing levels over 40mph.  Symptoms exactly those I had when my last axle went.  Couldn't swear to it being the pinion bearing but it's the diff somewhere and pinion bearing is most likely culprit.  Axle now done 130K.  Better than the last one that went at 100K.

Rebuild kits are very expensive and get more so if you have to then get a specialist to do the job.

So my bright idea was a straight axle swap, easier and cheaper..

Unfortunately, no-one seems to have any axles worth having that they don't need for themselves. Do they?

Thanks Snowy.

Sadly, I haven't got a 2.0 axle except for the one that's holding the back end of my 2.0 car off the floor.  So I can't off you a trade.

If the diff of diff bearings quicker to pull the shafts, rear cover and drop the diff out and in if not too particular on the backlash, but if pinion you are right drop the axle. Not worth the messing.

I've come across two collapsed pinions, one in a 1.6 ascona my mate bought for £30 with 12 months MOT because it would only go forward when accelerating and when you lifted off pulled the pinion in and locked the back wheels. Was fun towing that one. We fitted my old 1981 2.0 axle as I had it lying around.

The axle under J reg I swapped out when the pinion started jumping a tooth on the crown as no desire to have the back end lock at speed.

Are you open to fitting any axle that will physically go under?

Yes Mantadoc, any axle at a pinch.

Trying for a 3.67:1 ratio axle as the 1.9 is a bit stodgy in performance as it is and don't want to knock any more off acceleration with a 2.0 litre 3.44:1 axle.  Also it would mess with the speedo.

Ive got two low milage 1.6 axles sitting i dont need

Well, who loves ya, baby?  Me for sure.

PM me with price for one and transport price and we have a deal.  Should be able to get someone to transport it down if it's strapped to a pallet.  I towed the last one home on a trailer but that was 7 miles away, not from Ayrshire!

Many thanks,

  • 1 month later...

I have an axle off a 1.8 on the floor ready to pick up.

£100 Blackburn Lancashire not too far away.

Hi Rutts,

Sounds interesting and I would be happy to do business with you, but I think I ought to give Shooie another chance to reply first in case he's got flu or gone away on holiday.  Only fair, as he had apparently got the pallet ready for shipping but something seems to have gone adrift.  If I don't get a reply off him by 10th Jan I will definitely get back to you.  OK?

Thanks

BJ
