A tad expensive ?

For £8000 that car needs to be top dollar almost like new & as the owner says it's got micro blistering on the bonnet & boot plus some bobbling on the paint work.

But it is a nice example of an Ascona

However it it makes close to the asking price then Jame's Ascona is worth more as would be mine  :)

Think Dave's & Jame's Ascona is a cut above the ebay one - actually way above.

4 door Escorts don't go for £8k & it has too many mods even in period to warrent the asking price - think it will be around for a while.

80k is not low - 25k is.

Would need another + 4k spent on it to justify the asking price including a respray, suspension & brakes etc.

Love the colour tho' :)

Interesting post Neil, and spot on, top dollar means car has to be perfect, not needing another couple of grand putting in to get to that point.

It raises and intersting debate about values though, is an Ascona worth more or less than the equivalent pre facelift Manta? One one hand they are more rare, but have a less sporty image than the Manta. There doesn't seem to be enough very good ones changing hands to get an idea.

The door Ascona is a cut above the Mk1 Cavalier which trade around £ 3-4 k for a really good one - I would put my hand in my pocket & pay £4-5 for an Ascona of the standard of yours & Dave's.

It doesn't take long to spend 3k improving a slightly less nice car to make it like the 2 pictured so even 6K is a worthwhile price when you add things up.

At 6k Dave's ( like the clean wheel arches with body colour visable ) is still a good valuation.

Originality is the key at present when in the market for a rare model - it is all of course down to the market the price paid.

From experience I know how sometimes a good car can go for more - I sold a TR7 DHC 10,000 miles original paint / trim / hood & too good to use on the road for just under 10k which was unheard of in TR7 circles but was a one off being straight out the box it was an easy sell & that was through a dealer on commision.Downside it became too nice to take on the road & I was sick of sitting in fields at shows after a week polishing it - cars are ment to be driven so it went.

Unfortunely it went to a collector in Malta so won't be seen again but with RHD it is a good market.

My Manta SR Coupe went for a good price last month so good cars do command a reasonable price but most of us are not in the Classic Car hobby for the profit - £'s per mile I got my money's worth even just attending Billing in the summer and tinkering in the garage improving it ( which the cash I put in I didn't get back but had a great time ) .

No plans for another Manta but there is a big hole in an empty garage for another convertible maybe ......

See what these are commanding today

Get a centaur Neil you know it makes sense  B)

Tried that route before I bought the Manta SR - drove a round trip of 650 miles to see one in Exeter from York - looked good in the photo's he sent & chap was nice but having been restored had lost that 'tightness'.

You know when you shut the door - you just are waitng for that feeling that something is going to fall off & driving along you are waiting for that Buster Ketting moment when the doors fly open  :o

Had a Cavalier mk2 Convertible so been down that route - they rusted worse that a Manta underneath.

Being 6ft 4" I need a No.2 hair cut to get in most coupes so converibles don't have that problem except the windscreen top can be in my direct line of sight - length does matter !

Opel Ascona have a look of there own to me and are getting hard to find now and if you want a right hand drive two door you got more chance finding hens teeth ! So some people will take a chance and push the price they is always someone willing to pay the price if they really what that make of car ! As the years go on the price will go up all classic & retro cars are holding good money now but I would have a Ascona over manta myself at the moment I am doing a total nut & bolt rebuild on a geniue opel Ascona i2000 2 door right hand drive but would not no what to ask for it if I wos to sell her after its finished !!!

Wow - had sold mine to a guy towards the end of last year for 3.5k stg (without engine and box) - pretty glad now that he couldn't come up with the funds.... think she will sit in the corner now with the rest of my scrap....

I used to own a red Talbot Sunbeam in virtually that same shade of red as that one in the background, until about 5 years ago. Different Reg though. That isn't rally prepped is it? Not many of those around now either!!

Nice Ascona pics on this thread though chaps, all looking great.

Yea but all the guy wanted was the car on its own. Sure glad he didn't come up with the money now - my brain was fried there for a few weeks so decided to sell some stuff - thankfully i'm back to normal now....

The ebay one is certainly too dear, when there are two others for about 3K with lower mileages. Seller got quite abusive when I pointed out the others for sale

Stradacab, your 4dr is much better condition, and the foglamps are original Bosch, while the ebay one has aftermarket lights for driving and foglamps. What front spoiler is that? Not seen one with a bottom lip before.

400R, your coupe looks really great and I'd be keen to purchase if you are still willing to sell on without engine/gearbox/wheels before I get too excited about a 4dr. Would be nice to finally replace my old SR with another coupe

As a point of interest, I thought there was either a Berlina model with lower foglamps but no driving lamps, and with different seat/door trim, or an SR model with front driving lamps above the bumper and sporty steering wheel. Never seen a listing in my Opel literature for a Berlina SR. Can anyone please clarify?
