Hatch Fuel Tank

Take your tank out and take it to a specialist to repair. But are you sure it is the tank and not the lines? If your fuel lines are still the original (steel sections) these probably will be leaking by now.

Probably the breather pipes and the vent pipes,, if its not the actual rubber pipes then the little brazed on tubes have probably rotted off.

Take the tank off, assess and then get the pipes replaced, if needed then get the brazed on tubes replaced.

I have welded loads of tanks, so long as you vent well and flush with water then while welding have an airline gently blowing through it you don't get any problems with petrol vapours exploding.

Obviously use caution and if the tank needs a whopping great patch its junk but for small repairs its ok.

Is there any alternative fuel tank options to replace the original? Maybe I could get a different sort of fuel tank in it so I don't have this famous problem.

There isn't a direct replacement that I know of. But there are companies who will make a bespoke tank from your old one. But this costs ££££...

The alternative is to use a standard alloy or plastic boot mounted tank until you get yours fixed.

Just to echo the comments above, Get the tank dropped (only 4 bolts) and see what she's like? I know its you're only car and that would take it off the road but if shes leaking petrol and you're still using her - Its dangerous, Not a lecture just seen it too many times in my line of work :/ , Hope you get her sorted stud :)

More importantly if it is leaking petrol the local council can take the car away and just crush it as it poses a significant threat (in their eyes).

Okay I am taking it off the road to sort the problem but all I want to ask is what do I do with the full tank of fuel?

The easiest way to drain an injection tank is remove the fuel feed from the injection rail, attach a longer length of 8mm id fuel hose (Long enough to reach a jerry can or what ever petrol cans you have), then bridge the injection really terminals for the fuel pump. One is a permanent live the other is the fuel pump, pin 30 - permanent live, thick red cable and pin 87 - feed to fuel pump, thick white or blue.

That way you let the fuel pump do most of the work.

Thanks

Just remember the pin numbers are off the top of my head, go and check the manual for yourself. And if you are not confident to drain fuel by yourself then get someone who is to help you.

given up with the search its pointless i think its leaking from my pipes so will get it repaired if i can or get another tank in boot :)

Just to warn you there is a very good chance that the tank will also leak at the bottom where the metal straps wrap around the tank. They are usually ok until either the corrosion gets too bad or you disturb the tank.

Maybe someone has had the tank off and replaced it without the cushion/padding between tank and straps, I have come across that before, not a good move at all. Anyway Jack, you say you need a flywheel, and you also need a petrol tank, so why are you looking for mats?

Hi, just to update this topic, it isn't the biggest panic I thought it was and my Manta is capable of holding fuel fine I just make sure not to fill it to the top otherwise it comes out again. I had one of my friends look at it who also has two Mantas and we figured out that it is only one of the pipes that is letting the fuel out and I have been told it isn't too much of a hard job.

Hi Julian, long time since I spoke to you :) but I have figured out that my actual fuel tank is okay it is just a pipe and I have bought a new flywheel the only reason being is that my Manta judders sometimes and I think my existing flywheel needs to be skimmed and I can put a nice replacement on whilst my existing flywheel goes away to be skimmed :) Floor mats are just something I wanted to get and since I sometimes have to wait a while for the part I want I have to buy things when I can.
