Guys,

A different 'engine temp' question from the usual...!

Recently I've been running my new 2.2 CIH engine in. Probably done about 160km. Strange thing is that the car is running 'too cool'. The top hose gets just about hot enough that its hot to touch, and at no point has the thermostat ever opened. I know the thermostat is working OK, I tested it before I fitted it, and just from feeling the hoses, it seems like the water is just not getting that hot.

Now I think the main reason for this is I fitted one of the larger diameter, 7-blade fans to the engine (fixed fan, no clutch), thinking the 2.2 would probably run hotter than the old 1.9. So it's a simple enough thing to do to get an old 5-blade unit and try that.

This is probably a silly question...but is there anything else (timing, mixture?) that could cause the engine to run 'cold'?!

Thanks,
Fin

If the fan is permanently on that might do it.

My 2,2 is the opposite. I am running without a thermostat, fan on full and its only at night, when it rains, or cruising at almost zero throttle it'll run near 90 degrees.

Wow, yeh, yours sounds the other way. You're probably making a lot more power than me though, my engine is basically standard, and on standard 2.0 injection.

The fan is on full time alright, but it also was on the 1.9 that used to be in the car, and the 2.2 is running much cooler. I'll try to get my hands on a standard fan blade set and see if that allows the temperature up a bit. Am still surprised how much more cooling the 7 blade fan is doing though, if that is really what's making it run so cool.

If the thermostat is one with a big washer on the other end running without it can make your car hotter not cooler!

Had fitted a new thermostat which refused to open. Whipped it out as needed to be going somewhere. Running cooler than it did before. My manta is just weird tho. And haunted.

If the type with a washer on the back that allow recirculation there is no guarantee where the water flows without it as nothing to direct it through the rad or round the block.

You can end up recirculating when too hot and / or putting water through the rad when too cool, both the opposite of what is wanted. You probably need an accurate way to measure temp to see where the problem really lies, i.e. engine, stat or temp gauge

I know on the 2.4 they have a funny thermostat housing that has a re-circulation pipe back to the block (or something like that) and i think it was to warm the engine up quicker from cold, not sure if the 2.2 had it and if that sort of setup was left what issues it could cause if not working correctly??

Must get the old manual out and have a look!!

GTE has the same arrangement, most things do made in the last 3o odd years.

The old style stats used to just cut off flow so you could get hot spots.

It's simple really...............
