All i can suggest is get a multimeter on it, check if you have volts arriving along the wire, if you have then it could be a bad earth, a common fault, if you have not got volts then you will need to go back long the circuit seeing how far the volts are getting.

As for the door rubber i can not really help wihout seeing it, perhaps some photos could help.

wouldnt have thought a bad earth as the brake lights are working or are there earths at fuse box+ switches that im missing????

I really think you need invest in a multimeter, i would not be without one when looking into electrical issues.

With one of them you can trace the wiring back along the circuit seeing how far the electric is getting, then you will know if your dealing with broken rear lights or something in the dashboard, fusebox or controls.

Just a pennys worth, but have you all the earths up front, clean and secure, and are all front lights working, take it you have correct bulbs type fitted to rear,

something tells me earths up front cause tail light problems! You should also have earths at rear, but you will need a multimeter to test any power.

Or a simple bulb, with two wires soldered, at the very least.
