Trooker
Was there an issue with oil starvation around the cam?

Potentially - this is just a way to keep a small bath of oil in the head to assist the lube of the cam
Limeysore
These little gizmos are a must in a CIH engine Opel GT. In the GT the engine is tilted around 5 degrees towards the passenger side (LHD) and then tilted downwards towards the rear of the car, resulting in potential oil starvation to the cam and lifters.
Mickfrad
Oil level raisers now available on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293627979464 Is this a worth while mod to a standard Cih and how are they fitted.
cam.in.head
never seen one to that design, usually they are just a tube .or the ones ive seen are . they were fitted to later 2 litre engines .not sure about the last year or so of 1.6 ones. and never heard of a 1.6 wearing out its cam lobes but seen many an early 2 litre do it.usually on cylinder three for some reason so definately a worthwhile mod. Got one that style on mine. Seen a few of the German companies doing them like this now.

Mickfrad
Pretty sure these fit into a drain hole in the top of the head. To help keep a puddle of oil sat on top. just wondered if they just pressed or hammered in. My worry would be it coming loose and bouncing around the top. Sounds to me like a piece of pipe the right size would do the same job. Edited June 30, 2020 by Mickfrad
H-400
Did some years ago a overhaul of a 1.9CIH Manta A head, was original no stemseal head but milled it so stemseals did fit. Pulled that pipe out a 2.0 head and it looked as a sheet of metal that whas wrapped. So it gave some tension in the hole where it belongs, you can find it when you open that cover on the back of the head: Edited June 30, 2020 by H-400

Mickfrad
Thanks Herman so engine needs to come out or at least head off to fit. So that hopefully won’t be happening for a while.
BIG STU
I have been after one of these since I had my engine fully refurbished years ago. The guy who did my engine recommended them as it helps save excessive wear and premature failure of the camshaft. So recently purchased one off ebay for my 1900 coupe. Fitted it yesterday. Nice easy job. Got engine up to temperature and removed rocker cover..Then carefully tapped the oil level raiser into the oil return hole at the back of the cylinder head. Then refitted the rocker cover. Job done.😁👍 Just make sure you have your tools handy to do the job and to gain access as quickly as possible. As you need the head as hot as possible so everything has fully expanded. Easier fitment of oil level raiser... Just be careful not to burn yourself 🤞🤪. Good luck.

Mickfrad
Just thought I’d check mine now I know where it goes, only to find it’s already there. We’re they fitted to later models from standard ?
®evo03
Can it be seen through we cam removal hole in back of head, without removing the rocker cover? Seems the easiest route? Old school guy once told me CIH GM engines died at high revs due to oil starvation, when driven at 9/10ths. Heads would warp! Thats oil starvation cured! Any upgrade for coolant flow? BIG STU
They do the job nicely. Makes a big difference on starting the engine. Oil already at the top end... Alot quieter and I thought mine was quiet to start off with anyway 👍. Well worth the money and time 😁.

It will fit all cam in Head engines, fitting can be done with engine in the car, rocker cover off. It's quite simple. Many engines already have a version fitted, I used to fit a length of copper pipe to any I encountered that did not have it .
Irmscher Man
These always came as standard fitment for all Irmscher conversions, even as far back at the late seventies. When I bought a new Enem cam for the i200 in 1990, the Oil bath raiser tube was part of the kit. I have just made a small order for half a dozen of them, so we can put a few on sale via the club shop.
