Opel Manta Wings (not GM)

Last time i looked it was 27k for a mk2, or mk1 shell. Most are treated to all new panels, or another fortune spend kitcar specing it up to rally spec, completed by aged plate, if this doesnt drive prices up nothing will, for these and originals. So there is a 43k difference, between a shell, and complete car?

Ok back to mantas, yeh, still same old, same old, you get what you pay for.

Been in touch with them and they seem decent people, snag is the process kills your original panel unless things have changed. I'd donate my rear quarter so long as I got a replacement from the press if anyone else wanted to join in we could get a whole range of panels done.

I know the club were investigating but not sure how far they got.

Ive been hearing about omoc club getting panels for years, don't think the panels will ever happen, ive new panels here, but would be in the same boat, would need a replacement and a guarantee of quality.  Any idea on price for quarters, or quantity needed, number of batchs.

From what I remember the club had already bought a number of panels to have remade.....what happened to them? I know the club was in talks of getting panels remade, it was one topic discussed at one of the last AGMs I attended so it can’t get brushed under the carpet. If panels have been bought using club funds to help produce replacements it’s in club interest to continue that and should be brought back into play. Especially how shows and meets have been on hold for 12 months we should have been pressing this more while everyone is tinkering in their sheds, surely?

There will come a time when panels won't be needed, there are only so many unrestored cars out there that will get restored. Those figures will decline with time, a full restoration end up a garage queen, plaything, whatever you wanna call it

think the panel thing is twenty years too late, its not viable to make tooling for 5 roof skins a year? What would make it viable, 20 roof skins a year? 40?  What benefit is it being a omoc club member with original panels, that wants to buy a roof skin, opposed to joe public?  I can't even get my OMOC membership changed, so i give up? 

Influencers get paid nowadays! Its some peoples income, career, Seems here you have a pay to be an influencer, the members are the club,.......how things have changed!

It would be great to see this form keeping a record of members completed manta projects every year so we could look back and see how many were returned to the road with mot, bet the numbers would be low. Just a quick tally count for reference at the start of “your project threads”.

I completed my one in 2020 and put on an mot, first one since 1999, I looked on how many left and there were 14 1985 GT/E’s mot’d and I made that up to 15.

yes i saw this last week and thought the same thing: why cant this be done for the Manta? then I saw the £75k price tag...

At £75k you would be buying a manta with the equivalent newish modern GM engine, em, reconditioned running gear, modern brakes, electrics, dash clocks, etc, as per the mk2 escort. 

or the shell alone at £25k, to reshell your own, but this is my point, would it take £50k, to build a car up from the £25k shell, ?

If I recall, the  standard Manta shell rust proofing was't great....Remember doing some preventative work on my 88 Exclusive when it was about 3 years old...under the front arches, found surface rust on A pillar and side bulkead A panel...did some scraping and found Opel had just undersealed straight over bare metal, so much for the dipping shown on the last Manta video! So annoyed I made a complaint to Vauxhalls, to be told don't worry, its covered by a 5 year anti perforation warranty....so spent the next 2 weeks primering the panels and painting with Smooth hammerite.... which has saved my panels...may explain why Exclusives rust away so easily...

That new manta shell wouldnt be made by opel, as is the mk2 isnt made by ford, dont even think it can be registered new

Mantas are no different to any other car, its not about paint etc, its getting it sold, out the door, look at new bmw orange peel paint! The zinc dipping works to a certain degree, but not with salt, caked mud and constant wet humid environnent. 

Think the exclusives where stamped out with different grade of metal, mid 80s recession remember!

It is possible to get one registered new. I remember seeing a picture online of a red 70 plate mk2 escort. Must have had a DVLA vin number issued and enough proof to verify its age. Crazy.

I think the only way it would be registered new is if it was prototype car as no way would it pass the standards for 'new model'

Talking about the feasibility of new replacement panels being pressed and possibly not enough interest to make it work I seen this replacement carbon fibre roof skin, would this be a modern answer to all the rusty manta  sun roofs out there?

There are lots of carbon fibre roof replacements on YouTube and if you’ve got the know-how and an autoclave it looks like a straight forward process. I bet if you were buying 10 or more of them you’d get them made for £600 to £800 each.

I would offer one of my cars to make a mould but they both have sunroofs. Someone with a non sunroof car should investigate the cost of getting a GRP mould made up.
