Starter Motor for 1979 Cavalier Sports Hatch

Hi guys,

My Cavalier’s starter motor has packed in. As per usual, Manta parts seem to be a lot easier to find and most the time the two are exactly the same. I can’t find an exact match for my starter motor however. I’m considering a high torque upgrade but don’t want to spend too much money if it’s not going to fit. The current part is a Delco 152-5 28-9 (see picture) and the replacement I’m looking at is this

Any help and knowledge is greatly appreciated. Thanks I’m advance!

yes any cam in head starter will fit physically.  all the smaller engined ones were the same ( 1.6,1.9,2.0) but you got a stronger one on a 2.2 then 2.4 and more so on the 6 cylinder versions. ive got a 6cyl one on my 2.2 and it  spins it a treat.

one of the differences to note is if you still have points ignition you will need a 1.6,1.9 or 2 litre pre 1982.  these have the extra spade terminal on the solenoid for the coil bypass. thats not to say you couldnt fit a suitable solenoid or add a relay if required.

to be honest i cant see any benefit in a high torque unit as thr standard starter is perfectly up to the job and the one in your link doesnt look to have the extra terminal anyway so you would need to mod the wiring with a relay anyway.

plenty of original starters about both new and used.

the one mr bandit has should be suitable if he finds it !

Will not fit a 1985 2.0 GTE .

Will try to find it and check

Sounds great. If you find it I’m happy to discuss pricing!
