brake servo options

hi. after having no replies to a wanted ad for a servo i was wondering on the options.

i did manage to find one on ebay from someone who breaks mantas but it was too rusty to use .obviously a new one will pop up on there eventually as everything always does but not always when you need it !

so

mine is an ATE type and i beleive an early type at that too. deep bodied and although still 8" diameter diapragm it seems a beefier unit. my other cav has one of the other types (still ate thou) and the brakes are noticeably better on the one that had the deeper servo so theres obviously some internal differences over diameter.

viewing pictures makes a mk1 golf 1.8 type look very similar. some mk1 golfs had the master cylinder actuating rod set back whereas our ones and the 1.8 appear level as is required.the rear seems to be a short threaded stud as our too.

so. my question is. .are they suitable or are there any other candidates.

Mine is from a Mk1 golf. Slightly smaller diameter to clear V8. No noticeable difference in performance. I don’t recall making any modification to the actuator rod.

hi. no autos and manuals all the same. (1.6,1.9,2.0)ive had a fair few cavs over the years and some have a deeper servo type.still ate though not the delco type. i think 1.3 models had a smaller servo maybee but only had 2 and cannot remember.

im pretty sure when i replaced the one on my 76 a few years back due to casing rust that it was the deeper style and had been on since new.

i cannot beleive the cavs ive stripped over the years and never bothered saving the servos as they were a part that never seemed to fail. obviously age is now creeping up on these cars so failiures are starting to happen.

hopefully somebody will have one somewhere.even temporarily until i find a new or very good one.

If I get chance I might have one in the box of spares that came with my 79 shell, but it’s in big old boxes of stuff on my shelfs

that would be great if you find one. even if its a thinner style it may keep me going for a bit. thankyou.

i have also asked my mate whos a vw guy. hes not sure till he looks at one !

Will take a look for you

I also got a golf one ages ago too, and it is smaller diameter, but deeper. The main for me was it gave better master cylinder options too.

i have had a confirmation from a w specialist that the mk1 golf one is indeed 8" diameter and should fit.

so that at least helps knowing that its the same servo. no modifications .will buy one and have a comparison for myself anyway.

obviously still looking for one and no harm if i get one from someone here or ebay as a spare .will update as i find out.

I used a Golf one due to it being smaller. Since then I welded a “dish” into the inner wheel arch and a new front plate into the bulk head and moved the servo further away from the engine. I don’t recall why I went to this much effort; it’s possible the golf one wasn’t man enough and I reverted to the original Manta one or I simply needed even more space.

thats strange. the vw people said it was identical .same 8" diameter ,single diapragm.

i have my original one here and il compare it to the golf one when i get it but certainly dont want to go smaller.and dont want to go modified or non standard.the cav brakes are excellent ,even by modern standards .

somebody added a confused face. am i heading up the wrong path or do you know something i dont ?

Click on the confused face and it will show you who’s reacted (me)

I’m confused about what I was playing at all those years ago changing the servo for one of the same size.
