Spent some time working on the Manta over the weekend.

My mechanic friend had the car in last week to do front gearbox seal, rear main seal and clutch for me to save me time.

Sadly the rear main seal I had was incorrect internal size and the clutch was 10mm too big.

He didnt want to fit the clutch as was concerned about it and says it has a much larger gap?

Not sure what he means as not seen him to talk too properly.

Anyway he put back together for me with old clutch. The rear main seal he didnt take out as wasnt leaking anyway. Says old clutch seems fine.

 

So I have car back. Drained the gearbox oil and changed it now seal done. Front gearbox seal was leaking - a lot.

The oil that came out I have never seen anything so brown and thick - not far off jelly.

I am sure the fresh oil will be much better and after driving for few hundred yards the gearbox went lovely and quiet!

So next jobs for me are leaking brake master cylinder and a replacement fuel pipe from rear to engine bay.

Then brake shoes and pads and a really good clean inside.

Then onto trying to remove all the old Ziebart from inner wings and engine bay as it looks terrible.

Looks like you are making some really good progress and the recommissioning hasnt turned up anything too serious to deal with. There are a few things on the hatchback that can be problematic but it seems as though this car has been well looked after. The petrol tanks on hatches have a habit of rusting through where the straps go underneath and by the time they leak, the problem is usually serious. It was a carp idea to put steel straps directly onto a pressed steel tank - I always use a bit of rubber liner on the straps now - sorry I should have read your thread earlier, when you had the tank out!

Anyway - looking forward to seeing the car in the flesh and catching up with you.

Any ideas on if you can get a new master cylinder? or do i go used from MrCarlos

It's a shame there aren't more Mantas left, it would be good to see a few more at shows, although it does mean you possibly get more interest in your car if you are the only one there. From my observations it looks like there are a number of Mantas on the road now in the east midlands. I can identify at least 6, 5 of which are active on here.

Be great to have a concerted effort to meet up next year. Mines soon to go into hibernation for this year.

last time i was lucky and found a new one on ebay . most are the ATE type but there are some cars with a delco type which is a different mounting ( unless you change the servo too)

or see if theres an overhaul kit . 

where is yours leaking ? internally between sections of out of the back ?

I am always up for meeting up and seeing other cars and chatting away.

 

Not sure I will take it off road this winter.

I Think I will use it on dry days for a run out as long as there is no salt on the roads - need to keep momentum going.

To be honest I cant see if it is leaking at moment - but losing fluid and everything else is good si maybe it is going down into Servo

 

Seems to be a lot of copies around on Ebay - maybe a used one from MrCarlos and a seal kit before i fit it.

also seeing as you are removing master it might be a good idea to remove the servo whilst acess is good and inspect/ futureproof it !

what i mean by that is

the rear of the servo that you dont ever see is sandwiched to the bulkhead with a rubber insulation material which can and does trap moisture. nearly all the servos ive removed have rust on the back around the mounting points which eventually go into holes.if you can clean yours up and remove any rust before it gets worse .ive had a few go holed and you loose servo reserve and get a hissing noise !    dont be suprised if cleaning it up makes holes !

replacement used servos are around but getting scarcer .mk1 golf 1.8 is basically the same unit with a different pushrod .

Try big red for the master cylinder, they can refurbish as good as new. When the servo fails, it just fails (as in it leaks and no longer serviceable). But I would not mess with it if it’s still good, if it ain’t broke etc.

Good investment to have a used on as a spare, then perhaps get the master refurbished or do it yourself 👍

I was very surprised to find one half full of brake fluid. I removed it cleaned it up and replaced it but there was no noticeable improvement in breaking. It looks like your servo could do with a nice new coat of enamel and nothing more, but I would have the master overhauled. 👍

I have managed to find a new master cylinder from a seller in Italy for £134 including shipping so that is on the way.

Hopefully its the correct one.

 

I will clean and paint the servo or get a good used one i think.

Then i can refurb the old units and keep as stock

Good call. Hope the shipping goes well 👍

On another note, reading your other post, and not confuse things. The servo is instrumental in the breathing of the engine. It is connected via the connecting vacuum pipe
