I have a spare Getrag 240 gearbox that I would like to get fully refurbished/reconditioned ready to go into my car later in the year. I’ve rung various gearbox companies and many aren’t interested in touching a Getrag/old gearbox. I’ve spoken with All Gears in Worksop, who sound promising, but ….

1. Can anyone recommend a reliable company/individual that I can call to discuss what’s required/costs.

2. Can anyone tell me where/if internal parts are available. Bearings and seals are ok to find but other components are much harder. Some of those I have spoken to will take on the job providing I can find any parts that my be required. At this stage, I don’t know if parts will be required but I need to know a source just in case.

As always, any help much appreciated.

Steve.

Depends what sort of state the box is in.

I did one and it was mostly seals and bearings that needed replacing but you won't really know until the box is apart.

You could split the box and take a look to see how the internals are and if anything looks broken before you go to the gearbox place.

As @Jessopia74 says, there are some BMW bits that are the same.

Some parts can be found for the bmw from same era that used the same version of the 240 box https://www.bmw-spare-parts.com/bmw-cars/3-Series/1987/318i/Manual-Transmission/Getrag-240-inner-gear-shifting-parts/1/23_0530/23/472521042

But depending what you need they are becoming hard to source

Thanks for the quick replies from all of you. I didn’t know the BMW used the same box but that could prove very useful. The parts diagrams linked with your replies (Jess & Andy) are of great help to - at least I’ll know what they are talking about now 😁. (If I can get my gearbox looking like yours Andy I’ll be very happy.)

Rutts - It is good to know that someone has used All Gears and that you are happy with the result. Looking at their website, they would appear to specialize in Getrag gearboxes but their quote was a few hundred above the others I have had. However, quality first, worry about the cost after! Jef Boite is another useful contact, having had a quick look at his website, it’s now bookmarked.

Thanks again 👍

Hey Steve

No problem. The diagram is handy as there is a sneaky little bolt on one of the sides that doesn't look like it has anything to do with splitting the 2 parts but its attached to a stud on the rear of the box and without that being out you would not get the box apart 🙂 otherwise It was quite easy to take apart. The hard bit if keeping the 3 selector shafts in place when putting the front back on! not easy on your own 🙂 If they know the Getrag then you should be ok. Make sure the main shaft bearing is changed when you are there as if that is a bit worn it makes the box noisy, main reason for stripping mine.

Just lots of cleaning and painting to get mine like that 🙂

£650 iirc changed a good few bearings and also input shaft gears where fitted as bearing collapsed taking three teeth off one gear.

that is pretty reasonable for what you had done, and cheaper to repair than a replacement used box.

That is a good price. I was quoted £750 plus vat to check over, change bearings and seals within that price, but anything else was extra. I also have a shipping cost on that as they are about 200 miles from me.

For that price i would have a go myself 🙂

Seals are easy, main input bearing from memory was pressed on but not hard to do yourself.

Main thing was taking it slowly and not forcing it and getting someone to help you when putting it back together!

I would split it and see what its like inside as if its all good inside then its only a service job.

Might be worth looking on a few BMW forums to see if you can get an idea of what sort of bits they change on theirs as there is not much info on the Opel sites but more chance of the BMW ones having some decent info. Or maybe the Opel GT club in the US as there is loads of info on their and I expect there will be some gearbox talk https://www.opelgt.com/

Done a few 240s myself as you say only real thing to remember is take out that one bolt that holds it all together. Parts are out there just search thoroughly on Internet. First split is scary but take your time.

It does look like you can find parts especially with the BMW being so similar.

You do need to set aside enough time and never rush it or force it apart and its not as scary as it looks. Its just a whole load of cogs on shafts 🙂

All sounds tempting and scary in equal measure. At this stage, I have never actually seen inside a gearbox, first hand, and probably wouldn’t know a worn part from a good one. With parts at a premium, which will only get worse, it’s probably best that I get someone else to do it (at least I’ll have a guarantee/comeback should there be a problem). Once done properly the gearbox should see me ok for years, unless we all get priced off the road for having petrol cars. If I’m feeling brave, then I could open up to try and sort the gearbox that comes out of my car as, hopefully, I’ll have a little more knowledge, know where to acquire the parts and still have the option of giving it to someone else, if I can’t do it, whilst maintaining a useable car on the road.
