    Track Manta

    Like you I have also considered selling the car as I have nowhere dry to store it. It would be better for the car if it was inside a warm garage all winter. My car hasn't been too bad, I wash and wax it before winter to give it some protection, after this it only gets the occasional wash until it warms up again. Now it's got some surface rust in places where the filler that blends the arches to the shell has cracked and a few small patches elsewhere. I'm not too worried at the moment as I'd like to get it re-sprayed within the next couple of years. Underneath was solid when it had the last MOT. During winter I have more of a problem with water getting in to the car, the windows misting up and a useless heater.

    Track Manta

    My Manta is outside all year. I keep it taxed all year so I can drive it in the winter as well.

  4. Remove it, I don't have one on my current Manta which has a C20XE and I didn't have one on my old one which was had a 1.8E injection system fitted to it. Do you still have the pre-pump filter fitted?

  6. I asked a question about changing this bearing last year - search for "Input Shaft Bearing" for some more information. I still haven't done this job!
  7. I saw this car about a month ago. It will need a new roof as it's rusting around the factory sunroof, also quite rusty in the boot where it meets the rear panel - not helped by the fact that the sunroof drain tubes were not in the holes by the tank, so were draining into the boot . The front inner wings and behind the head lamps look ok as does the nosecone. I haven't looked underneath so can't help there. It will need a new radiator fan as it sounds like the bearing has gone and the heater pipes weren't connected to the car heater matrix.
  8. He only purchased it recently, I'm sure there will be some changes to the car over the next few months.
  9. Had a visit this morning from a new Manta owner who lives 5 miles away. It's standard apart from some stripes and the painted wheels.

    Torque Tube Donut

    Thinking about it I never had any problems with the original donut on my old 1.8. The axle had a full rebuild before I put it on the car, haven't thought of balancing the prop. I'll check the universal joints for play. As the input bearing is noisy on the gearbox there's a chance that the one on the output side has worn too which might create a problem. Alternatively as said above it could just be inferior rubber on the donuts.
  14. Thank you for the information Herman, the pictures and descriptions make it look easy! Is anything from the inside likely to fall off when the front of the bellhousing is removed?

    Torque Tube Donut

    I thought I'd bring this to the top again. Last year I fitted a new heavy duty donut from Edelschmiede (I also changed the bearing and gearbox oil seal) and just over a year and 2000 miles later the donut has a lot of cracks in it. There's a lot of free movement in the prop and oil has started to leak out of the gearbox seal again! Would I better off using the softer donut, or is there a better alternative to the donut available? Thanks again.
  17. The input shaft bearing on the 5 speed box is getting noisy. Is it possible to change this without dismantling the gearbox?
  18. The GT had a Zetec engine with type 9 gearbox and standard axle. The Brown Sports Hatch had a Rover V8 with manual gearbox and a standard Manta automatic axle. I don't know who had the mk1 Cav 4dr but there was a wanted ad for 2 replacement front wings written in permanent marker, near the hole in the wing.

    Sticky Manta

    If you've got one, a steam cleaner with wallpaper attachment will do the job quicker than a heat gun. Any adhesive remaining can be removed with Autoglym tar and adhesive remover.
  20. As already stated it sounds like a blockage or fuel pump problem. I'm sure my old mk1 Cavalier used to have a filter inside the pump housing that you could take out and clean. Another thing worth checking is the carb as a lot of them have a small in-built fuel filter, also check the carb diaphragm for a split.

    Like the look of the car lowered, is that the parked height - do you drive at a higher setting? It's something I had thought about doing to mine, but need clearance for speed bumps and gravel roads. My old Sportshatch had 60mm lowered springs and Spax adjustables, the handling was excellent but it always scraped the exhaust over speed bumps, etc. Love the seats, did you retrim the back seats as well as they look like new.
