Jonnh
Hi I’ve just replaced the valve stem oil seals so does anyone have an idea starting point for valve clearance for the solid lifters. The engine is 2.0 block 2.2 head with a high lift cam but I’ve no idea what the cam is . Looks like they have to be set with the engine running warm ? I know it’s been discussed many times but seems mostly hydraulic can’t find much on solid Thanks in advance
Moonmonkey
I always used 12thou (0.3mm) on solid lifters with rally camshafts Kent cams recommend larger for all of their performance cams up to 24thou (0.61mm)for exhaust valve clearance on the full race cam. They recommend 16thou (0.41mm) on their fast road cam. Maybe start at 16 and tighten if you not happy but keep 12 as minimum

Moonmonkey
Valve clearance should be set when the engine is at normal operating temperature. As you say I would set them cold and then recheck and adjust when the engine is warm. The Haynes manual quotes that you should do the final setting when the engine is warm and running at idle speed, so you have to make a chain guard etc. I always found this a pain in the arse and unnecessary, so I wouldn't recommend it. I used to get the engine to normal temp, then turn the engine off and set them static. It is far safer, cleaner and easier to get it right.
