mantapaperman
hi.anyone know the thread/bolt size of the front TOP ball joint studs and nuts? i'm changing the ball joint and they are well crusty, was going to replace with stainless. i think they are 15mm spanner size but the thread looks fine? thanks very much
opel2000
They take a 19mm socket/spanner, so M12 would be a pretty good guess. But personally would not replace with a stainless Nut, but a new Nylock nut Whoops I read that wrong, you mean the nuts and bolts each side of the ball joint. again I wouldn't replace these with stainless due to the shear strength of staainless steel being way way less than an 8.8 grade steel bolt. Normally stainless fasteners are supplied in A2 grade, did a quick search and this may explain clearly to you. http://www.westfieldfasteners.co.uk/ScrewBolt_M.html I would expect to see the A4 80 grade stainless fasteners to be very very expensive. YOU SHOULD NEVER USE STAINLESS STEEL FASTENERS IN ANY POTENTIAL HIGH STRESS AREAS (unless they are of the higher grade) Edited April 20, 2011 by opel2000
mantapaperman
thanks opel2000 for that..never thought about the strength issue . so if i replace with ordinary steel bolts what thread are they..or can i just use m10 that seem to fit the holes? cheers
