*energy*
evening guys, just starting to try find stuff out about my new winter project.im planning a mk1 cavalier, low, banded wheels and an sr20det engine..i have the car...i have the engine.just need some advice on some parts. im wanting to lower by a fair chunk...can i use manta springs on the car?iv read a few people cutting springs to get the height they want, but i just dont fancy going down that route. i will ofcourse be changing shocks etc on the car...im planning a good build on this car and running big-ish power so not wanting to bodge anything up. next question is the diff...how much power can a standard diff from a cav or manta handle?whats the best upgrade?iv been looking about on line and scimitar axle pops up alot. and last question is brakes...can i upgrade the brakes so i can keep the standard 13" wheels,or am i best to go for bigger wheels and use something different? thanks for any help and advice. tony g
Rab the B series manta suspension is all the same as mk1 cav so no prob for bits there. Diff will get to its limits depending how much power you put out with the SR 20 but I cant say for sure. (btw I have an sr20det in my e36 ) Have you trial fitted the engine into the cav yet? On my beemer i had to get a one off sump fabricated to get the bowl at the rear. Will the front sumped sr lump go in without mods? *energy*
Hi tony thanks for the reply. iv done nothing exept buy the car and buy the engine.just starting to gather some info on it..its my winter project so want it ready for either pvs or the retro show at the pod next year. The engine i have bought from a friend who is upgraging his 200sx to an rb25 lump..the sr20 was rolling roaded a couple months at 298.8bhp with the boost turned down a bit,so its a fairly powerful lump iv chosen. im hoping it wont be to difficult a job as iv seen the sr20 sneak into alot of old rwd cars. on the manta suspention...if i buy a 40mm lowering kit for a manta, would that drop the cavalier the same 40mm or more? thanks
spiney_norman
If you buy a 40mm kit for a Manta GT/E then it'll probably drop a Cav by about 60-70mm. As for the brakes, if I was going to run that sort of power in a Cavalier I'd be looking at bigger wheels just to keep it on the road, the standard 185s (or even 165s, depending on your Cav's spec) wouldn't grip for very long! I'd definitely upgrade brakes as well, but there are plenty of ways of doing that, well worth having a good search on these forums mate. And get some pictures up! *energy*
ye that was also a thought...tyres will do nothing on 13s...ashame as i realy wanted banded rostyles:-( cant find another wheel i fancy. il stick some pictures up later on....sporting some uber cool tsw stealths lol. tony g
Another thing to think about is engine weight. The Sr 20 is light compared to the CIH lump so springs that lower a cav 30mm for eg may only lower half that with the SR in there. It may be worth trying a lowering spring for an 1800 gt to get close to the weights (although still not the same) Cheers Tony
*energy*
Thanks Tony,i was unsure on weights,im surprised the sr20 is lighter.
tony g
The SR is ally block and head, the CIH is iron / iron and the 1.8 manta is iron block ally head Tony
*energy*
well that is very handy!was worried about weight being an issue. winter projects this year is this mk1 cavalier sr20det built and a mk1 escort sr20de build.
tony g
If using the DE from a front wheel drive car the bell housing pattern is different to the DET fitted to rear wheel drive cars so check you can get a box to fit Tony
