waite01
I have a fairly rotten A series that I have as a project. I decided the easiest route to take was to reshell it so I bought the solid shell off eBay this week. I'm only now thinking where do I stand on this? Do I need the v5 for the new shell? Which cars identity do I use? I've read about swapping vins over ect but don't want to loose the car.
Shug
Legally, the car is the shell as that's what carries the vin. If you reshell, you have a different car, so you do need v5 for new shell.
1900SR
As Shug said, to do it legally you would use the id from the new shell. In addition, technically to retain that car's registration number your car will need to comply with VOSA's points system. Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below if you want to keep the original registration number. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame. Part Points Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer) 5 Suspension (front and back) - original 2 Axles (both) - original 2 Transmission - original 2 Steering assembly - original 2 Engine - original 1 In practice as long as the components apart from shell and engine are original type you'll get the points for them, as there is no way of identifying whether they were the original ones supplied with the car (unless you say otherwise). If you don't manage to get 8 points then the car will need to go for a type approval test, and if it passes that it'll be on a Q plate. Simon P is the person to talk to if you're planning to build something that won't retain 8 points. Edited April 29, 2014 by 1900SR
waite01
To be honest I'm not planning on building anything incredible, was just going to transfer all good mechanical bits off the rotten shell and build a nice motor along with all the interior and onto the solid shell. I may however have messed up abit as I just asked the seller if the reg docs came with it and he said no he wants to keep them on retention And it was just a shell, however it's already on a flatbed on its way to me and I have paid him! Is it possible to keep the identity of the rotten shell that I have?? By the time I have worked it there would barely be any original structure left on it!
