Mantney
Hello all The dipstick in my 1.9 A pops out at high revs, I have spoken with Beaker about this and he advised its probably a blocked gauze in the rocker cover so I intend to replace this soon. He also advised that this is the sign of an unloved engine and therfore reccomends an overhaul. I don't currently have the time (or know how) to undertake this nor do I want to fork out for someone else to do it. So my question its this, should I use an engine flush additive for the interim? Best Regards Ant
cam.in.head
hi. using an engine flush will not solve your problem & could actually make things worse.if your engine is realy that bad then it will end up needing an overhaul even sooner. first you need to find out if everything is basically in good order or not.even a perfectly good engine will build up crankcase pressure if the breather system is blocked up so i would say get the engine up to temp first.then remove the oil filler cap.if theres a blockage there will be a release of built up pressure/fumes & possibly some oil splash.(dont burn youself !)then rev the engine.if its realy bad there will be a lot of fumes /smoke. but this realy depends on comparing with a known good engine.all engines will breath fumes but there shouldnt be clouds of them !. if its not bad then i would remove the rocker cover & clean the gauze.its not realy designed to be removed but is hidden in the middle section.it can be got out by carefully bending open the retaining tabs & pulling it out.clean it or replace it.refit cover & run.chances are there will now be more power, easier starting & dipstick should stay in !.better confirmation of engine condition can now be tested with a compression test. Thanks for that, your info is very much appreciated. It's not giving off much smoke at all. I have another rocker cover that I am preping ready to swap. I have pulled back the retaining clips and I have removed a separate gauze from each end. They are about 3 inches long. Is it possible there is another in the middle? cam.in.head
That should be all of it.the gauze is only there to catch any oil and allow it to drain back so I personally would not put it back as thick as it was.maybee when it's clean cut it in half and use these in each side.just make sure it can breath through it. See what it's like afterwards and report back !
Mantney
Weather permitting I'll do it this weekend, we shall see what happens, thanks again for your advice
Mantney
Swapped the rocker cover for a clean one today and after a bit of fettling managed to get the engine running. Got it up to temperature and gave it a rev. Dipstick stayed in but the is a trickle of oil from the seal. It's running a bit lumpy and isn't happy ticking over at much less than 2000 rpm bit of blue smoke from the exhaust too. It is the first time it's run in over 18 months.
