Solid Or Hydraulic Tappets

I have had conflicting advice regarding the tappets on Vauxhall/Opel CIH engines. Some say that all engines have hydraulic tappets that are self adjusting, or the tappets are adjusting but need to be set using a feeler gauge, with the engine running. Others, including some manuals, say that the 1.6 and 1.9 had solid tappets and only the 2.0 had hydraulic tappets. Can anyone tell me exactly what is what? Can you tell by looking at the setup without removing the b*****y things?

Thanks

1.6 had solid, 2.0S and 2.0E (ala GTE mante B ) had hydraulic.

Hydraulic are set with engine running, solid are set with feelers. They are easy to identify, the hydraulic ones have a plunger in the middle had drain holes on the side, easy way to be sure is loosen a rocker and take one out and squeeze it.

Many of us have a spare rocker cover with the top cut out (not cur out over the chain) for doing this on hydraulic
