How do. I'm looking to sell my 1986 Manta hatchback, it's a 1.8S Berlinetta which I have been working on to look like a GTE with a future engine mod in mind but currently has it's original 1.8 OHC that's covered 135,000 miles, the cambelt and fluids have been changed within the past couple of years but has most of the parts you need for an SEH or XE on carbs conversion.

The car has been lowered quite substantially using second hand springs and Spax adjustable shocks/dampers. The wheels are GTE ronals, the rear tyres are bald unfortunately but still good to keep as a rolling shell. I have stripped out most of the ruined interior which was heavily worn and stained by dirt, I have sourced the GTE spec early Daytona check Recaro seats and the runners needed to fit them, I've not been able to find any rear seats or parcel shelf so these are missing.

The car is in Vauxhall Anthracite Metallic, due to some heavy corrosion on the rear wheel arches the rear quarters and rear valance are in various states of repair and are in high build primer. There's a small amount of welding needed to the o/s/r wheel arch and I have removed the tank for this, the tank itself is leak free and I have is painted in waxoyl underbody sealant, the breather hoses will need replacing but is just common hose. The car is a runner but with the tank removed, I can rig up a jerry can in the spare wheel well if necessary.

With the exception of the wheel arches and some rot beginning in the sunroof, the shell is actually quite solid. It's had welding to the rear of the sills which show no sign of corrosion now. The car is recorded on the log book as having been substantially repaired in the past which indicates a previous write off put back on the road, however it has no signs of major damage repair and can be used like any other car, but this may serve better as a parts car rather than a continued project because of this.

I shall get some recent piccies up before long. The wings and doors are in good order, has all bronze (bronce) glass, good headlamps and also a one key lock set. The Getrag box is in great order as is usual for these.

I'm looking for £975 o.n.o. and I'm based in Bishopsworth, Bristol. Kindest thanks, Rick 07513 400181.

Hi Steve, I've not heard of Jason Baldock but I've only lived in this bit for a short while. I lived in Knowle with my now ex over a couple of years ago, then moved to Fishponds and now Bishopsworth, I only stayed in Bristol as we have a young daughter together.

Drop me a line if you're ever doing some kind of meet :thumbup

Everyone interested just seems to be after the sump and gearbox (you'll need the oil feed pick-up pipe too, plus some other bits prove very useful).

This is fine as I could do with a few non-drivetrain parts off the car too, but whatever happens, I will be selling the car with the V5 properly filled out. If you want the conversion parts, you will need to buy the car as a running rolling shell, I will remove the parts I need, and we can agree a price accordingly. If you take the parts you need, you could then have a pretty solid rolling shell to sell on. Please understand, I am not going to remove the gearbox and sump to sell to you seperate from the engine and car.

Something I would be interested in though, would be a swap/PX for a good quality tool box roller cabinet, I appreciate it won't be a snap-on one but I don't want some cheap flimsy catalogue crap either.

Thanks, Rick.

It would be ashame if a solid ( by old Opel standards ) and straight Manta might end up in the scrap yard just so as someone can rape it for its sump and gearbox.

If there is anyone out there who is contemplating tackling the rampent rot on their Manta, this one might be a better starting point, buy this and if you wanted to transfer your CIH engine then you could sell 'those bits' and with less expendature on body rot you would be effectively in profit.

Thanks Ian, there's plenty of options for it, unfortunately not plenty of buyers for it , as a whole car at least. The last 1.8S I had, was a proper GT/J (C series) which were hatch only and made for just a couple of years. I was putting back to standard, as this 'base model' would have been a bit different from the crowd, but alas, ended up giving up it's gearbox and such to another XE swap in a Chevette, Kadett or the like

This one isn't quite as much as a shame since it's previously been written off (a back bumper being worth more than the car, I assume) and this does make it a better candidate, but it's minimal rust would be worth grinding out and replacing with a rotter GTE's chassis number with a CIH and that would address all the issues here ....just a pity that's not exactly legal
