GTE fuel pump

Hi all, quick opinions please.

If I run a coupe out of fuel (the car lives on the drive and I start it occasionally, is it possible the fuel pump can seize?

The car normally starts fine, I suspected the fuel was running low and then the next time it wouldn't start. I can't feel the pump doing anything on cranking or with the 2p trick so I suspect the pump has stuck. I even put 12v direct to the terminal but nothing.  I added 2 jerry cans of fuel and I tried tapping it but to no avail, can I whack it or is it likely its time for a new pump?

cheers

guess what happened to me Roy?

i bought a pump on Ebay for £28 a few weeks ago and spent a lot of time installing it the weekend before last; started then ran the car up and down the garage drive a couple of times; put car back in garage.

went back on Saturday to do some work on the car, only to find it wouldn't start!!

after doing some fault finding, found the new pump had died, after much head scratching, so i bought a genuine Bosch item for £80 on Saturday evening.

after thinking about it yesterday, i noticed the car was badly over-fueling as I was running it down the drive-(it was over fueling beforehand anyway, but it was TERIBBLY over fueling), and I think that's something to do with the pump failure.

luckily I have 2 spare GTE ECU's + a Carlton 2.2 one in the garage, so will swap with one of those before starting the car after fitting the Bosch one.

So Danny do you suspect the new pump was at fault or the ecu? My 2.4 runs a full 2.2. Carlton injection system incl ecu.

Mine isn't started very often so I'm unlikely to see issues until I get my finger out and re mot it!

i think the ECU is at fault; i think the 2.7 is too demanding on it so causes the over fueling. because of this problem, i bought a Megasquirt ms3 ECU in back in 2006, and am finally in the process of getting it installed at the moment.

i also run a Carlton 2.2 head and injection system on my engine.

Just an observation, but when I set mine up I mistakenly used the 2.4 temp sensor in the thermostat housing and that caused overfueling. Switching to a new 2.2 one fixed it. Equally the notched wheel inside the airflow meter can be adjusted for richer or leaner running. I prefer plug and play which is why I have stuck to the full 2.2 system. God help me when I need to find a replacement part!

If it comes to you not needing the spare 2.2 ECU think of me! I'd happily buy it off you as a spare for mine. :)

Roy,

my Carlton head uses the standard temp sensor as far as i'm aware, and is standard apart from larger valves and gas flowed. is there a serial number or distinguishing mark to differentiate it from a standard one?

i'll let you have my 2.2 ECU once the megasquirt is up and running; its in the hand of a specialist i contacted a few weeks ago in Peterborough-i mentioned that i'd like to have the car ready before Billing, but he couldnt guarantee that due to his workload. there's no way it'll get through an MOT at the moment.

Thanks Danny, best of luck with the set up, When mine was overfuelling badly I had it trailered to a company in Crawley, really well known, engine tuning, rolling road etc etc. I gave them a budget of £500 to get it running sweet, after 2 weeks I had a call to say the budget was used up and they couldn't find the issue. It turned out to be the temp sensor as I said. I certainly hope you have better luck then me !

  • 2 weeks later...

Roy,

took the car for its first MOT since 2009 on Saturday, and noticed the engine "hunting" on the way down; the car passed the MOT, but on the way home, the engine proceeded to stall as soon as the clutch was released while changing gear.me and my best mate decided to try and limp back, but after a distance of about a quarter of a mile, we rang a mate who brought his van and tow rope, to get a tow home.

after discussing it with my best mate Andrew, who was with me,(and is the owner of a beautiful modified SRB coupe himself), we agreed the coil was at fault. i've ordered a new one plus an ignition module just in case. just need to tax her, fit the new coil and module, and fix a dead Kenlowe fan this Saturday, before the trip up to Billing on Sunday.

the Megasquirt install will have to wait for a later date as the guy i've lined up to do the work, is up to his ears at the moment. the overfuelling issue has been resolved temporarily but installing a spare ECU i had at the back of my garage.
