Driving into work yesterday a grinding noise started from the tunnel behind the front seat's didnt sound like the Dif you know that worring as you go quicker it's a constant noise just like pad's when they are just starting to rub the disc . (please don't let it be the diff its a lsd and worth about £1500)

Brake discs (front ) are fine and it def coming from the tunnel we checked the drums thinking it was them found out they are proper knackerd as well "and not the cause". S***ting my self now waiting for the report from the mechanic.

Getting under the car it looks like the diff has been extended with a tube that concets to the prop the prop it's self only being about a foot long with a dounut conecting them (could there be a bearing in it !!)

Its not the hand break cable rubbing on the prop either thats well out the way but does look like the gearbox mount has gone.

Any ideas guys :(:(:(

There is a bearing at the end of the torque tube where the propshaft joins it. (the doughnut bit)

They are that expensive to replace (if thats what it is) 25 euro for an A series one.

Does it sound the same sort of noise Shug !!!! Ill be happy to pay £25 euro for a bearing if it is that.

Kind regards

Rob

How bad is the gearbox mount? If its really knackered the box might be hanging lower and the propshaft will run at a different angle. (and possibly prematurely wear the bearing)

To make a grinding noise I'd imagine the bearing would have to be well and truly screwed.

If I had a ' shushing ' noise on mine I'd go for the gearbox mount .

is it constant ( waiting at the lights/junction ) or more pronounced

when engine/box are under demand ???

Is it conected to the left hand turn rubbing ?

Im saying a St Patrick's Day prayer for you.... RE: Diff

Im saying a St Patrick's Day prayer for you....

Thanks John it's only when you are underway, at the lights it stops.

On the rubbing we looked in all the arches with the wheels off and there is no sign of rubbing on either the tyre's or arch so could be related will know more from the garage later today and keep you all up to date

Thanks for the prayer mate ill need it if the mrs finds out there is a big bill coming that's the only draw back to being marrierd to a Irish lass the temper

just remove the diff cover and check for little bits of metal etc, but remember to put LSD oil back in or you will wreck the diff (if its not already) and i don't know who told you the diff is worth £1500 as a new one is half that. propshaft center bearings are quite common to go but normally make a noise for ages. check the UJ's on the prop too.

My heart is saying it's not the diff and my wallet is praying

I had a diff go on one of my escort MK2's and you knew it was going, the increase in noise the quicker you got ect and it was a completely different noise.

But will ask them to check + excuse my naivety I never knew that LSD oil was any different to normal Diff oil many thanks for the head's up. I take it's the viscosity.

many thanks

Right i have just heard from the garage it is the bearing in the front of the toque tube, they say it looks like the problem has not been caused by the gearbox mount but by water ingress !!!

is this a common problem !!!

so can anyone tell me where can i get the bearing guys

Many thanks

Robert
