Hello,

After last months new meeting we've decided to do the same again on March 3rd. We meet at a pub/resteraunt called "The Toby Carvery" at the top end of Dronfield near Sheffield. This pub has only just changed it's name from "The Bowshaw Inn" last month. Last time we had six people turn up from our area and had a few Retro cars in the carpark to look around too. Mick brought his really tidy and original looking Manta B coupe, Dill brought his caged up,track ready Porsche 928 S2,Darren came in his RWD Toyota Starlet with Hot rod spec full race engine and I took my 2 door Ascona B.

Rob, who came to the last meeting, has recently bought another Opel in the form of a Brown Ascona B and is hoping to get it back on the road after being parked up for the last 12 years. This meeting will be the cars first outing if he gets it done on time. I've been trying to get him to modify it but he won't listen and I'm hoping we can talk him round on the 3rd!

Mick's bought a nice Bedford CF van and I hope he gets chance to bring either this or his Manta again although I'm sure he'll be well on the way with the engine mods he was on about last month.

Darren's been looking at AE86 corollas this month, he's wanted one for a while now. He's also seen an XE powered Chevette for sale and is probably going for a look this weekend.

Anyway... If you want a night out talking about old cars or are after help with your project then come along and say hello... You'll be more than welcome. We arrive about 7.30 to 8 pm and stay till about 10pm.

See you there...Luke

No think ive got enough to do, The carb on the CF was poo so as the 76 is having a face lift ive robbed its 32/36 webber, but then the filter wouldnt fit so ive had to make an inlet pipe thingy and its worked really well and it looks good too, thought for a bit i wouldnt be able to go to the meet in it as the rocker gasket was duff and i hadnt got another but Worsborough motor spares came up trumps with a complete head set, he keeps them in for the icecream vans that are CF based  ,

Casper,

I'll bring some pictures on Thursday night!

Daytona yellow,Lowered 4 inches,Blacked out windows,Twin 40 DCNF's,Escort Cosworth bonnet vents...... I thought I was "THE MAN" back in the day (1994)! Actually, it went pretty well and handled amazingly but I'm now expecting to be on the wrong end of the Piss taking for these comments.... I'm sure DillV8 will have more to say about this...Luke.

Not that I can ever let the subject of YELLOW AUSTIN drop, in your defence the turbo Austin was quicker than the Golf GTI of the day........Dont know what colour i would have had if i had to have an Austin, they were either earing aid baige or dog s**t brown, oh and of coarse YELLOW but other than BT cant imagine anybody would have one of those..........surely not !!!!!

Casper,

The Yellow car had the Tickford Turbo's bodykit and I had it painted Yellow. I had an MG 2.0 injection one later, that I converted to Turbo power. My name is Luke... and I was a Maestrophile! Will I have to sit on my own table in the pub? The Twin carbed MG Maestro 1600 was also quicker than the Golf GTI and so was the Maestro EFI! .......... I'll get my coat.

Casper,

I had 2 mates with MG 1600 Maestros, 3 mates with EFI Maestros, a mate with a genuine Turbo, my brother had a 1300 Maestro and my dad ran a 1600 Maestro Vanden Plas with the digital dash and voice synthesis unit " Bing bong...Warning... Low engine oil pressure...Bing bong...Warning...High engine temperature" Maestrolicious! Picture the front of my house when everyone came round! When it rained there was a rainbow running down the road from our driveway!

Hey, There's nowt wrong with Dolly Sprints..They were a fast motor,127 Horses if I remember correctly.

A couple of years ago I noticed a car hidden under a tarpaulin when I started a new job. I managed to last until dinner time, on the first day of my new job before I had to have a peek at what was under the sheet. Imagine my surprise when it was an MG Maestro race car! Not any old race car but Tony Pond's MG Maestro EFI Challenge car! I couldn't believe it was just sat there, covered in rust. I asked about what was happening with it and the garage owner said it was probably for sale and that it needed reshelling ideally, but he had also got a mint shell if I was interested. I went home and spent the evening on Youtube, watching this very same car racing around various tracks and thinking how sad it was that this car had ended up where it was and in that state. I was half way through the Ascona restoration at the time and also about three quarters of the way through my Manta build so I had to leave the Maestro where it was. It is still there today, minus the tarpaulin and now has a smashed windscreen. If I wasn't into the Opels now I would have definatly been swayed towards "The Dark Side" again !

Imagine finding an AC Delco Manta 400 or a Rothmans Ascona under a tarpaulin, stuck in the corner of a yard, rusting away! .......( or a Renault 4 Rob!)

Casper,

The Manta looks loads better now. Are you still thinking about banded steels? I might know where there's a set of Rostyle type 7x13's. They used to be on my old Chevette and came off a Buick Skylark in the scrapyard. The friend who bought my Chevette broke it up and still has these rims in his cellar. I ran them on 185/6013 tyres. This picture was taken in 2000. I still have the Escort in my garage so I've blanked the registration out. The Chevette had been rallied in the early Eighties and had a John Noble 1256 Rally engine with Dellorto 45 carb, a full cage, works type dash and full rewire. The XR2 was my daily driver at the time. Rob's Brown Ascona sailed through it's MOT today so it will be on the road tomorrow!

Cool line up mate, looks like a photo from the 80s, It would be interesting to see how the 76 sits on those banded rosys can you get them? the photo ive posted is a bit decieving as its a bit lower on the rear must be the drive or the fact ive been dismantling, do you want me to bring that exclusive spoiler and do you know if anybody has got a 32/36 weber

Casper,

The lad who has the wheels lives at Stocksbridge, between Sheffield and Barnsley. I'll try and ring him Thursday to see if he's still got them. If you speak to Darren on Thursday night he will probably have a 32/36 carb. If not then the lad with the wheels at Stocksbridge has a cellar full of parts and even has some brand new boxed carbs though I'm not sure which ones they are. Would you be able to bring that spoiler with you to the meet please? I might be a little bit late as the White Asconas broke yesterday so I'll be getting a lift in the Brown Ascona with Rob. He'll be giving me some stick about this I'm sure! See you tomorrow...Luke

The second of the new Sheffield area meetings went well again last night,

This week didn't start off well at all. On Tuesday morning I was giving the Ascona some stick out of a junction when there was a loud bang, followed by a knocking and then a serious misfire. I was on my way to work and decided to try and keep it running to get it home. The car limped, or should I say staggered, back through a couple of miles of traffic but made it home without any overheating or loss of oil pressure. I'd replaced a tight water pump a couple of weeks before so I thought the cam timing might have jumped as my car still has the daft sprung loaded belt tensioner fitted on it's Ecotec engine.

As I was limping the car home I remembered replying to the a post on this website about peoples opinion of these Ecotec engines and I wrote something like" Has anyone ever blown one of these engines up" and "My car gets used and murdered everyday and never goes wrong" Well, Now I can say I do know someone who's blown one up! I'm waiting until Saturday afternoon to strip the Cylinder head off but I'm expecting to find a burn't out valve, a broken valve spring or a broken valve. If any of these have happened then I'm not sure you could class this as blowing up really as it's just one of those things that can happen to anyone with any car." Blown up" in my opinion is chucking a rod out or seizing it up somehow but I'm sure some of you lot will disagree!

Anyway, my lack of wheels for this months meeting resulted in Rob picking me up in the famous " Standard or Streetfighter" Brown Ascona. the banter started as soon as he turned up..."16 Valves?... I've S**t them" , "You need a nice Cam in head and autobox mate" I was taking some... big time, but you can always rely on Rob to kick you while you're down! This was the first time I'd been for a proper ride in his Brown car and I was amazed at how well it goes for a standard and automatic car. The last standard 1970's/Early 80's car I'd been in was a 1600 Ghia MK2 Escort and I was expecting similar performance from this Ascona. Rob's car pulled strongly up the Dronfield Bypass at just over 100mph and was comfortable, quiet and felt safe! I couldn't believe that an old car could be stood for 12 years and then with a few minor repairs and not even an oil change, be performing like this!

We arrived a bit later than expected ( you need to get it Red topped Rob) to find Paul and Mick admiring Mick's latest purchase, a mint Bedford CF2 panel van in the carpark and as we pulled up they were laughing at the smell of burning ATF coming from Rob's brown car. Paul's Omega estate looked well again, and stood out in the carpark from all the other newer cars. It looked like he had been polishing it every day since the last meet!

Mick's CF2 van looks really tidy. It's got a bit of a Custom Truck look about it with it's Funky stripes and Retro alloy wheels. The bodywork looks incredibly straight and its paintwork looks fresh still! The interior also looks smart without the usual dents and scrapes you would expect from any commercial vehicle. I think he's planning to "Day van" it with a couple of new windows and a luxury re trim in the back. Good luck to him! He showed us under the bonnet and it's running a Manta B engine by the look of things with a carb and the CF's 5 speed Dog legged box. "The box is taking some getting used to" he was saying as the length of the lever makes it a bit of a" wind and find" gear change! He's already swapped a few parts over from his Manta as the carb was nackered and he's made his own Power cap out of steel to adapt a K and N air filter on. This is a top quality bit of fabrication and looks easily as good as the alloy ones you can get for the XE engine conversions.

Darren pulled up in his Hot rod RWD Starlet. You need to hear it trying to tick over! He's been welding wider front wheelarch lips into the wings this month to cover its 7x13 Minilites and has repainted the front wings again. In the next couple of weeks he's converting it to 1800 Zetec power and is fabricating his own sump, engine mounts and inlet manifold to fit some bike carbs. He's planning on using the same Ford trigger wheel ignition as my Ascona.

The other Paul ( DillV8) couldn't make it this month but says his latest Manta, an immaculate Carmine red Exclusive, will hopefully be on the road for next month's meet. He's bought some deep dish rims for his car so We're looking forward to seeing how it looks next time!

Mick had brought me a really straight Exclusive Coupe spoiler from a Monaco Blue car he's broken up recently. We offered it up against Robs Brown Ascona ( much to his disgust ) "This is what you need" I joked!

Inside the pub was quiet untill we turned up. I'd brought some pictures of a couple of my old cars including my first one, a boy racered up Maestro from 1994! All it was missing was the 3 spoke wheels! Fido dido and Oakley stickers anyone? Ha Ha....

Paul, with the Omega, has just bought a bargain priced ZF Manta Limited slip differential off Ebay. He's fitting this to a 16 Valved GTE hatchback that he's building at the moment. He's looking forward to Do- nuts, Rolling burnouts etc!

We were probably rattling on about diffs for half an hour or so!

Everyone seemed to have a good night and we stayed until chucking out time. I'm looking forward to next month already.... If this sounds like your cup of tea or you are in the area then come over and say hello! Next one planned for the 7th of April... See you there... Luke,Darren,Mick,Paul,Rob and Paul D.

Cheers for that spoiler Mick.... It's a minter

Glad everyone had a good time...Gutted I missed the photo's of the old Yellow peril ;) Did it have the obligatory pool of oil underneath?

Bloody Porker started leaking coolant after I spoke to you on the phone.Think I've just found where from this morning, luckily not serious but a few hours work none the less.

Hopefully be in the Mantabus next time if all goes to plan

Its not immaculate Luke...Its ok for me but it won't be winning any concours events :thumbup
