Sorry, I've got a potential buyer lined up already. He sounds a bit weird though. He is a mate of one of the lads at work and they call him notted hanky, for reasons I can't discuss on here ! I'll fill you in on the details on Thursday night Mick... I'm not sure if I should sell it to him as he's going to carry his dog round in the back and the interior is like brand new. It sort of seems a shame for him to use it as his new daily driver as it would make a concours car with very little effort. I was going to list it on Ebay as I thought it would fetch at least £800 but when "Notted" rang up and I told him it was £800, he said no problem and was very keen to come and have a look at it. I suppose I should just take his money, for the quick sale,as the car cost me £200 to buy, and about another £120 to repair it for the MOT but I'd rather see it end up with an enthusiast. It's a proper timewarp car and still has all its original tyres fitted . If I put it on Ebay, it might not even fetch the money I've spent on it . What do you reckon I should do as I've started to get attatched to it and don't want to see a really rare and very tidy old car go to waste. If I wanted a normal car instead of the Ascona I'd definately run this old Riva. There's years and years of motoring left in it...... £800, a goldfish and an Appletree in August and she's yours.... Luke.

Ascona's also a B, so don't try that one... Before I accept your offer I'll need a few dimensions as I've only got a window box and an old Pyrex jug for fishy. I need the outer circumference of the trees's branches and an exact height in mm. Also, what colour eyes does fishy have? ( watch your fingers )............ £750 in used notes, a small green eyed goldfish ( to match the cat's ) , an Apple tree and I'll not send " Notted " round, seeing as you're a mate. .................................. Too late Too late will be the cry, when the man with the bargains has passed you by...........

Ive spoke to the black eyed fish and its not happy that im pimping it out for a four wheel replacement and says she's taking me to court about it as the stress is too much as for the tree its windy and cant get a true measurement in mm but its about 6 ft tall, I think " knotted " wins it................................:P

It looks like I finished running the new head in today when a Corrado VR6 came past me on the Dronfield bypass this afternoon.

I revved out up the hill in fifth gear ! The new head and fancy headgasket with slots that circulate the coolant towards the fire rings seem to make the engine run cooler as an added bonus. I've still got the same cool running thermostat from Courtenay, the same Temp gauge transmitter switch and the electric fan still comes in at three quarters on the temp gauge so it's definately running cooler. The car held its temperature at halfway whilst flat out for at least a couple of minutes. I've been offered the use of one of these wideband air/fuel ratio computers for a couple of days as a favour, because I want to check what the fuelling is like on my engine when under load. I was thinking about getting it rolling roaded but there doesn't seem to be many people who are good with bike carbs and have a decent rolling road. I'm not bothered about taking it to the Bogg brothers either as every car they tune seems to make 160bhp... Whatever it is. I think the ignition timing's about as close as is possible as I kept advancing it until it pinked under load and then knocked it back a bit. The car seems to run fine but I'd still rather check the emissions are ok so as not to melt anything by running it lean. I'll probably end up fitting a sensor and air/fuel gauge permanently anyway.

I think another back axle is on the cards soon for the Ascona. It sounds like there's a fair bit of backlash when you take up drive and then back off but when I've checked it, it's still well within spec ( .014mm ) I didn't realise how bad this was until last month, when Rob took me for a spin in the Brown Ascona and there was no noise from his diff whatsoever. I know my stripped out car will make things noisier than one with the full trim fitted but it has been annoying me for a while now. I'll try and pick up another 3.67 1800 Manta axle in good condition, fit it to my car to try it and then build my LSD into it with some new side bearings I've already got. Anyone got a nice quiet 1800 axle for sale?........ Luke

sounds sweet mate. do you think it will ever be done..........................

I thought it was done... Maybe not ! The Ascona was originally bought as a reshell for my rusty old GTE coupe daily driver, but it's ended up going a bit further than that. I just want to concentrate on my Manta build as I've not touched it for ages now.

Mick,

I've found that oil pressure sender unit and will bring it with me on Thursday night. Rob's asked me to see if you've got a chrome sill trim for his Brown Ascona? It's the one that runs along the full length of the top of the sill. If you've got one could you dig it out for Thursday night if possible please?

Dill,

Could you stick my name on that 1800 axle please? Looks like another trip up to the farm soon then ! Let me know how much it is will you?

See you all on Thursday and I'll bring that old diff casing to compare to Pauls new LSD..... Hopefully it can be machined down to the same dimensions..... Luke

The Third of the new Sheffield area meetings was held last Thursday evening at Dronfield near Sheffield.

Rob, ( BHP on here), had been struggling to get his exhaust to fit around the anti roll bar on his 16V A series and called round at my place to have a look at a custom made manifold and system I've had built for my Manta. Rob had designed, and had made, a custom ARB with a lowered centre section to give extra clearance for his Ashley manifold to fit but when he fitted it to the car, decided it hung a little bit too low as he'll be running his A on lowered suspension. After looking at the exhaust on my car I think he's going to go for one of these manifolds and refit the standard ARB to give more ground clearance.

Anyway, we set off in the Asconas heading for the Dronfield meet. Rob was leading the way in the brown car and as the traffic cleared and we pulled onto the bypass I thought it would be rude not to waste him. I accelerated past him and then pulled across as I knew he wouldn't be happy until he was back in front and sure enough he then overtook, poor old CIH was screaming, and Rob was laughing and rocking forwards and backwards in his seat. He kept it flat out all the way up the bypass and down the other side and as I dropped back to give myself room to dodge any pistons / rods that may suddenly appear in my path I realised that Rob would like nothing better than to pull into the carpark and announce that " That waster ... will be here in a minute... I've just done him up the Bypass" and then follow this up with something along the lines of " Rallycars... I've S**t them !" or " What he needs is an old CIH and autobox, Those valvers have got no torque you know". Foot down now, I need to catch him up. He shot out in front of another car on the roundabout so I never did get back in front ( that's my official excuse )...

As we pulled into the carpark I recognised a really tidy yellow Chevette, parked in the middle of the carpark, from the Retro rides meeting at Meadowhall every month. I'd told Mick, the owner, about our new Manta meet a couple of months ago. Mick had brought his mate Dave with him, who's got a MK2 Escort with a Vulcan Pinto in it ( lucky git ). Dave said he might bring the Escort out to one of our meets in the future. Mick's Chevette is the best one I've ever seen. It looks like a new car still and is completely standard with the original 13" steels but he's thinking about modifications soon and has been collecting parts up. Mick's also in the Manta club but doen't use the forum much. I think his I.d is Micktec if I remember right.

Mick and Dave were talking to Paul, the one from Doncaster with the 16V Hatchback, and he has recently bought a ZF Limited slip diff to fit to his car. He said that the part numbers on his diff were different to the ones I'd given him and he had brought his new diff along with him to compare to a spare normal diff I'd brought along. The halfshaft splines on his diff are the same as a Manta as I'd also taken a cut down shaft with me that I use for setting up my Diffs and this slotted straight in. We measured the stud spacing to see if a Manta crownwheel would fit and this looks good but the whole diff looked wider than mine and where the sidebearings fit on is a fair bit bigger. Looking at his diff, it would seem that with a couple of hours on a lathe, this diff could be made to fit. I would guess that this is a Commodore GSE diff but like I say, I'm only guessing. With the amount of material that needs removing we could probably machine it to suit either a 3.44 GTE diff or a 3.67 1800 one. We got this measuring out of the way in the carpark outside as we didn't think the Pub staff would be impressed with us laying diff parts out on the Bar. If we had moved the meet to Barnsley then apparently this kind of behaviour is the norm.

Speaking of Barnsley, Mick and Paul then rolled up in their Mantas. Mick's red B has undergone a serious transformation this month... Out with the old.... and in with a new 2 litre and 5 speed box, 4 branch tubular manifold and system, lowered suspension, HID headlamp conversion ( I'm still suffering with the welding flash Mick), Exclusive interior and clocks, and at least another 30 to 40 horses I'd guess from the smile on his face ! Mick's also fitted some "Foose" decals though I'm not sure what Chip would think! He had been racing Paul ( DillV8 ) in his new Carmine red Exclusive on the way there and had suprised both Paul, and a few boyracers on the way. Paul's new car looked really well. The bodywork's nice and straight and it has a good fibreglass 400 bonnet that fits 100 times better than my Fibreglass Ascona one ! Paul has only had this car on the road a couple of days and has recently decided to go back, after a really long break, to running Mantas again as his daily drive. It looks like he's bought a good car as it's only just been restored by the look of things so won't need rebuilding like most Mantas do. He's picked up a set if 15" Borbets for it too and I think they look loads better than the 17" wheels it came with. They've got plenty of dish on the rim and I think they are about 8" wide ! Paul's looking at the engine soon as he said he was struggling to keep up with Mick on the way there !

Paul, from Doncaster, had just bought another Manta that night on Ebay. He's also going back to running a Manta as his daily driver so the Omega's up for grabs . 2.2 DTI Estate in Black anyone? He says his Mrs is not "sharing the love" for the new Manta and told us he's spent his housekeeping money on this new car ( Now that..... Is commitment ! ) Bread and butter sandwiches for dinner for at least a couple of months then ! His new car is a GTE hatch in Matt black and is already taxed and tested so it's ready to go. Did this car belong to anyone on here I wonder? He was planning on picking it up from somewhere in Derbyshire on Friday night. Did you make it back ok Paul ?

Anyway... we had another good night with 8 people turning up and 2 Mantas, 2 Asconas and a mint Chevette in the carpark. It should be 3 Mantas next month ! Quite a few people were looking round the cars outside and we stayed for a couple of hours and had a laugh about what had gone off since the last time. Nice to see a couple of new faces there too ( cheers Mick and Dave ) I'll stick some photos on in the next couple of days ...... Luke

Ian,

You'll be there soon.. Did you make it to the Retro rides meet last Monday? I kept an eye out for your mates Mk1 Escort but might have missed it in the eighty or ninety odd cars there. See you soon.... Luke.

Couldnt make it to Retro meet, how was it? My mate went to one Saturday night at Leeds. I think its called American and Hot Rod or summat like that. Apparently they meet every month and theres all kinds of vehicles including classics. Gets a good turnout.
