Gearbox Build

I have a few gearboxes that need a bit of TLC.

One jumps out of fourth.

One has a smashed bell housing ( poor thing feel off the gearbox lift and nearly took my foot off)

One crunches into second .

The last one will be bork rings and the smashed casing is maybe fixable, but my point is will the gearboxes be easy to rebuild? Are there any good a rebuild manuals out there?

What type of gearboxes are we talking about? Is it 240 getrags ?

If they are, you can still get all internal parts from BMW (as they also use getrag gearboxes). Drawings etc are also available on the web, but a complete guide will be difficult to find.

Personally i have never had the guts to start working on those gearboxes, so i have always bought new ones instead.unsure.gif

Can be done with time and patience. Opel gt forums had a breakdown from a manual on how to dismantle and rebuild. Problem i've found is that without experience and new parts to look at how do you know which parts are worn? The ones i have dismantled all looked fine but the gearbox guy said that there were certain parts that we're well worn.

As Montza says parts are available, but they are expensive. I tend to give any of the boxes i use to a gearbox specialist. Last one i had done was for a check over, cost me 80 quid, they checked it and put new seals in for that which i thought was pretty good.

Sounds like the baulk rings are worn in yours though. Last price i got for those a couple of years ago was over 40 quid a piece plus vat.

If they are all getrag 5 speed and the smashed one is internally good then simple, the cluster and rear casing comes out easily, so just swap the front half casing from one of the others onto it.

To do this, unbolt the release bearing carrier sleeve from inside the bellhousing, release thebig circlip, then undo all the bolts that hold the casing halves together near the rear of the gearbox, then look for the two 13mm bolt heads either side of the casing split line on one side of the box. Remove the one nearest the bellhousing end, but only loosen the rear most one. Casing will now pull in half leaving all gears attached to rear part, just watch out for reverse idler shaft thrust washer as it tends to drop off the reverse idler shaft ( the shaft with the bolt that you left in but loose.)

Pretty much reverse the above to put it all back together, dead easy, just need some half decent circlip pliers for thebig circlip behind the release bearing carrier housing

Ps this is a good fix for knackered 1.8 manta boxes, as the above works for swapping a 1.8 box's front half casing onto a 2.0gte box, the internals are identical

The box I have is a 1.8 box but I do have few spare 1.8 boxes and a 2.0 box also.

I'll have a look on the Opel gt website to see what I can find, I'll not be taking them apart just yet as I don't have a clean and tidy area to do it in but I'm building a garage and once it's done I'll be having ago for sure. Thanks guys for that, your advise has helped loads. thumbsup.gif
