399Road
I need a good Brake servo for my LHD Ascona. I want a good one ( brand new if possible ) as it's for my daily driver and I want it to last. I'm not sure if Manta ones fit or not. ...Luke.
paulmanta
I have a new diaphragm for an ATE servo, I have rebuilt loads and they are quite easy to do so long as they have not rusted through. Whats wrong with yours ?
399Road
Thanks for your quick reply Paul, When you press the brake pedal, the engine misfires and there's a loud hissing from behind the dash. All the pipework is fine and the one way valve is good too. The servo I've got fitted looks a bit smaller in diameter than the Manta ones and it also looks a bit thicker, with a few shapes pressed into it's front instead of being smooth like a Manta one. Would you know if your Diaphragm kit would fit my servo? If so, how much is it and how would you like me to pay? The casing looked mint about a year ago when I painted it off the car. Cheers... Luke. paulmanta
Sounds like you have an early servo with a split in it, I have a manta GTE one sat here complete if that is easier, I am pretty certain my diaphragm is for the GTE Manta servo. Pop a pic up on here of it so I can see which one you have, I can let you know the best plan of action. How has the fluid level been in the master cyl pot ? do you need to keep adding a little ever so often ? I only ask because these master cyls have a habit of filling the servo up with brake fluid over time and the first you know about it is a misfire when you press the pedal down and it squirts fluid into the inlet manifold. 399Road
Paul, I've removed the servo and opened it up. There's a large split in the Diaphragm next to where the vac pipe fits into the servo's casing. The split is covered in a thick brown gunge that smells of petrol so I'd say that's what's killed it. I've fitted a newer type servo but had problems trying to get a new master cylinder to fit it. I'll carry on trying to get an older type smaller servo. 399Road
I'm still looking for a Servo for an early Ascona b/ Manta. It needs to have the Master cylinder's mounting studs spaced at 85mm ( centre to centre ) NOT 60MM.
