hi i am considering a carlton 2 ltr gearbox for my cav coupe which is having a 16v lump fitted. This consideration is due to manta boxes being hard to come by and when the do, personally i think they are fetching silly prices, but hey what do i know?

i wanted to know if there are any problems in fitting the carlton box. i think i have heard that the box is slightly bigger, so there will have to be mods done to the propshaft. i also think that i have to drop the shifter hole in the tunnel back a bit to compensate. other than this are there any other problems that i should be aware of. i have been told that a late model carlton 2 ltr box will bolt straight upto my xev engine. apparently the box is an AF25??............according to the gearbox specialist i phoned

Any comments?.......structural ones prefered!!

Just found your post.

Carlton box to fit 2.0 OHC engine will bolt to your Cavalier. I have one fitted to mine.

But: the remote is too long, as the Carlton chassis is longer. So your gearlever would exit nearly at the back of the front seat. (By "remote", I mean the control extension that bolts on the back of the box and has the gearlever on top of it, not the lever itself)

What you need is: shorter remote, as fitted to Manta. Propshaft from Manta 2.0 5-speed, or cut down Cav one and have it rebalanced. Mod to crossmember (I used welded angleirons, very sophisticated) to locate the rear of the box. Shorter gearlever from Manta (can use Cav 2 lever, just no need to operate the lift collar for reverse)..

Cut hole in gear tunnel to accommodate new gearlever position. Fit Manta console, which will have correct gearlever position. (Or use Cav Mk1 1300 console, must be millions about, laff laff, which bizarrely has the correct position for this mod). Enormous strength and a mate to help lift and wriggle the ****ing box into the very tight space in the Cav transmission tunnel (Manta tunnel graft helps, but can be done by whacking the Cav tunnel to fit)

Don't forget to use the right gearoil to refill, NOT EP90. Getrag boxes don't like it.

Got a better idea. Why not just join the Club? Loads of PROPER tech advice and access to Parts For Sale as a member, which gets you into the inner circle. I'd say £25 membership was cheap at the price. I could have saved about £80 on my conversion if I'd been a member. Be about double that now.

Oops sorry, can't believe I wrote that.

Of course should have said 2.0 CIH engine.

Had just been talking to my mate about his other car and slipped up when typing, then it was too late to get back in and correct myself.

But the Carlton box route is a bit labour-intensive. I'm very pleased with the result - mine's been in about 10 years now - but the hassle that went with fitting it is still burned into my soul!
