The distributor also has the cam to drive the fuel pump. All you need to do is open up the centre hole for the pump itself. I have done this and it works. You can use a fuel pump gasket over the two bolt holes as a template to mark the centre hole. Then with a vacuum and hole cutter/drill bit open the centre up.
