Rover V8 And The Steering Shaft?

Hi All,

|I have got the engine and gearbox in and fitted ok but the starter seems to just bind on the steering shaft

I have got a new smaller one from real steal but this has its solenoide in the wrong place and is even worse the the old landy one

i have tryed moving the engine over to the pasanger side a bit but then it leaves no room for an exhaust manifold to go in

Has anyone messed with the steering drive to make it clear? i was thinking about removing the rubber coupling and replacing it with a UJ and use a sliding shaft arangment like what is used in the vectra's

any way it is coming along nicely now i have done a lot of the mot welding its just a shame it got in this state in the first place!

I gave the car to my sister about 10 years ago she used it for about 3 then it failed its mot kand just sat on there farm rusting so its in a bad way holes in the roof the works

i will post some pics and stuff in the my project soon its not prety tho

Thanks Again

Derek

Hi,

i put an 8 into an A where there is a lot less room - if i recall i used a range rover starter as that was shorter and hid teh solenoid away in a bettter place.

there's plenty out there that have done b's so i'm sure you'll ge a solid answer soon :-)

Aha I remember this problem I had a knackered starter with the solenoid in the correct position and a good starter with the solenoid fouling the steering shaft, after about a day of trying to p1ss about using the 2 to make one that would work and give the clearance i needed I simply ended up getting one of those tiny hi-torque starters from Rimmer Brothers had a piccy of it somewhere with a packet of Rothmans on top of it and the starter wasn't that much bigger than the fag packet.

I had a standard Rover SD1 starter which cleared the steering column by 'quite a bit' so perhaps even without having to buy the smaller jobs (which would be a good idea anyway as I think they're a more modern higher torque type which is more reliable if say you're battery is low or small) there are other starters that fit from other RV8 cars.

Thanks chaps

I have got one from Rimmer brothers (name still brings a smile)

It wasen't cheep at £220 deliverd but it looks like the way to go and it is very small so with a bit of luck i can space the pasanger side engine mount and bring the engine a bit more central alowing me to fit the p5 headers if not it will be block hugger time and another £150 quid LOL

Thanks again for the help

I may even get around to starting it :) i built the engine about 3 years ago and it hasent been run yet!

Tell you what mate, after having so much grief myself with the RV8 starter it was an absolute godsend just to ring up Rimmer's and get a brand spanking new tiny little thing delivered that I just simply knew "Not gonna have any probs with that"

And the size of these starters is just so damn sexy you get tempted to find an orifice ........ Hmmm Rimmers Bros eh? :o:D

Good to know you got sorted, and just been looking at your project too, all good stuff mate :thumbup

Another plus point with a new starter is that its unlikely to go wrong, as I imagine it would be difficult to change insitu. When I converted my HB Viva to V8 in the 80's, I had a similar problem with the rubber joint/starter interference so I spaced out the steering rack forwards which in effect lengthened the steering shaft, so the joint ended up in was in front of the starter starter....out of interest, my engine came out of a P6, 10.5 to 1 CR, with reversed coupe manifolds..

Looks cool mate.

good old high comp p6 engines are a nice starting point i recon shame i ended up with a low comp landy still will be good for supercharging or NOS:lol:

I am also going with p5 manifolds reversed seems the cheepest and the easyest way to go

Cheers
