GTEPETE
Still investigating if I can use slightly shortened Commodore rear shafts in my GTE lsd axle which I have not yet stripped. If someone has a GTE shaft out of its axle can they measure the length from the front flange face of the shaft to the end of the splined end in mm. Guess you may have to measure on an angle...thanks

I'll have a look tonight Cheers Chris
GTEPETE
Thanks Chris, and yes measure from the drum side...ps can you measure square to the shaft as the flange on the Commodore shaft is a larger diameter than a GTE one so measuring on the slope will not be accurate... mantadoc
Seem to remember making it 10 mm by eye but that might have been bearing to bearing, but as long as the end doesn't intrude far enough to foul the planet gears or axis does it matter? GTEPETE
Thanks Mantadoc, people have said that you end up with just 10mm of spline left after shortening, which will not be any use.
mantasrme
Just been out and measured a spare shaft and i get 711mm from outside of flange keeping paralel to the shaft.
GTEPETE
thanks, mantasrme. Just one more thing, what is the length of the splines?
mantasrme
Total length of splines is 39mm On my used shafts looking at the wear marks the first 9mm wasn't in anything So 29mm into the splines of the gear in the diff standard.

GTEPETE
mantasrme, one set of shafts I have has already been shortened to 720 (not by me)..Trying to work out exacttly what length of spline engages in the diff. You mentioned the first 9mm was unworn so left about 29mm spline, by looking at the wear marks on your shafts do you think all of the 29mm engages in the diff or a shorter amount? mantadoc
I'd still measure from the bearing seat as the drum setup may have been wider so length from the mounting face could give false info
mantasrme
The end 29mm all looks the same, so i would guess its all in the gear. I've also checked the measurment from inner face of bearing to end of shaft which is 633mm Just in case as Mantadoc says there is a difference in the outer end of the shaft. lamchop77
Thanks for all your help...once I get round to fitting shafts I will post up details and pictures. Pete Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you, had a few probs. Shaft length is 711mm as stated by mantasrme. The splines i've measured are 42 mm of full engagement length (not including the cutter run out). The wear marks on 2 sets of the shafts are 31mm long BUT there is a set that has a 36 mm wear mark length. I've checked with a dif that i have out of the casing and the spline on the planet gear is approx 31mm. It could be that the 31mm wear marks are from a 3.44 carrier and the longer wear marks are from the dead 3.67 carrier. The shaft ends with about 1mm protruding into the diff.
