MB15
Just stripped down the 1.8 hatch to do the timing belt No wonder i cant find a timing belt kit - doh , The water pump is the timing belt tensioner! This is the cheapest water pump spanner i could see, You get 41mm and 46 mm , mine is 46mm http://www.ebay.co.u...7#ht_796wt_1185 Just incase anyone else is planning doing their belt, Kev Edited February 22, 2012 by opeldvd11
mantasrme
Must admit i've never used a spanner doing one. I just nip the 3 bolts of the pump up slightly then tap the waterpump around until the required tension is on the belt. Then tighten the bolts and jobs done. Oh and while you're fitting the new belt put a new waterpump on aswell (about £10) I've had a couple that wouldn't seal when re-using the old pump as the O ring had been squished for too long to re-seal Now i only fit a new one
MB15
I was thinking about doing as you said tbh , A few of my pals said the same , Nip up the 3x bolts then tap to tension , Yeah i agree with you there - Water pump replace as standard , Car has been sitting 18 years and the cost is minimal so if your in there might as well do it , The Rad isn`t looking to good , (might be fine tho) Where to get a new one and roughly what cost? Any Ideas ?? I Have a spare top and bottom hat from another rad , (recore??) Kev Edited February 22, 2012 by opeldvd11
druid
I did the timing belt on my 1.8S 2 weekend's ago. I replaced the water pump with a brand new GM unit and fitted a new o ring. I did not need to use a waterpump spanner but it was fun grinding down a spanner to allow removal of the fan! My radiator looked a bit dodgy too so I had a look around on the net. Northern Radiator will do you one for around £200 with 3 year guarantee. I found that this lot are cheap at £98 + VAT (1 year guarantee): http://www.kempstonradiators.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=kempston&Product_Code=63200b The radiator shop are a similar price: http://www.kempstonradiators.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=kempston&Product_Code=63200b I managed to find a local radiator supplier with a Manta 1.8 radiator in stock and he let me have it for £85 inc. VAT!
MB15
Done the timing belt the night, Easy job to do , didn't need the water pump spanner at all Tip for ya! Save cutting down the spanners for the fan bolts Just get a long punch nd shock it to crack it off Leaving th alt belt on helps, reverse thread on these. Thanks I'll have a look at th links above when on the computer Can hardly see the screen on this phone, lol Kev
mantasrme
I would get your existing radiator re-cored with modern internals 2 or 3 cores depending on what they can fit in. Buying a complete radiator you might get the old core design that the manta had originally (which is much less efficient) or just a single core Think i've come across 4 different old radiators in the front of manta's there are some with 1 core and others with 2 But also when you take the rad cap off and look in, there are different thicknesses of the cores (which you can see the tube from above) the good ones are about 12mm long the poor ones are only about 7mm I did see a new radiator for sale at billing a few years back and that had just 1 of the 7mm cores Don't think that would cool a manta well with the viscous fan. I had my rad re-cored with twin cores several years back, then it was running on my old tuned cih engine. Which created a lot of heat when used hard on road rallies It was soo much better than the old one (a double thick core version) and the old one was in good condition until a stone holed it The electric rad fan only ever came on after the car had been standing for a several minutes when already hot, and then it was only on briefly before cutting out again. While they were re-coring it i also had them fit a 22mm boss to the lower tank to screw an elec rad fan switch in. That way its easy to remove the viscous fan and have an electric that you don't need to manually switch

Best Regards Kevin Hi Kev Maybe it would be best to get your rad re-cored then. That way you could have a double or triple core put in. Have you contacted these as they are local to you? http://www.autoinsid...rs/ai_36660.php 1 Highland Radiators Tel. 01463 222005 8 Carsegate Rd North, Inverness ... 2 Tayside Radiators Tel. 01382 622027 Unit 7 Larch Court/Myrekirk Pl . If you need to send the radiator away to be repaired, get a courier quote from parcel2go.com - I have used them quite a bit and they are cheap and reliable. http://www.parcel2go...CFYgmtAodvXDsng Edited February 24, 2012 by druid
mantasrme
Finding stock of a new rad in the uk is unlikely. I got a price from my local radiator place before Xmas to re-core one of my rads and it was around £110 I think That's Walkers radiators http://www.walkers-garage.co.uk/radiators.htm at south otterington, North Yorkshire They can do a recon of your rad and post it back to you in a couple of days. They fully strip the rad, replace the core with new modern style parts and rebuild then paint. It will look like a new rad when they're done. Might be your best option.
