zublet
Just picked up my new Manta 1.8 GT/J and there are a couple of small problems that you guys might be able to advise me on! It has a noisy thrust bearing - how easy are these to get hold of and is it a hard job to get to the clutch on a Manta? The fuel guage isnt working - what is this likely to be? Sender/ wiring/ guage? any advice would be appreciated the fan isnt working - do these tend to stick when they havent been used for a while? is there any obvious thing to check first? Also, I seem to be getting quite a lot of water ingress into the rear footwells of the car. Is this a common thing, can it be stopped or is it just one of those things? It needs a bit of work to get it how I want it, but overall very very pleased with what ive got! Any advice would be appreciated guys! Sam. spiney_norman
Bearing should be available on ebay, might be an idea to do the gearbox oil seals as well while the box is out. When you say the fan I'm assuming you mean the heater fan? Yes, they can seize up. Might be able to free it off when it's out, if not someone on here should be able to provide a good second hand one. opelmantagsi
the plug connection to the fan in the engine bay can also be a problem, wire into the terminals tends to get verdigreed up / wires broken, if its on the fan side you will proabably need to put a new plug in there, wiring is pretty short. If the fan is gone, its going to be very hard to find a new fan scroll, 2nd hand one might be easier to get but my experience is they are like rocking horses poo to find. I had a new old stock one and sent it back to a member in the UK, he could not track one down at all. gear box out to do the clutch and remember to mark the flywheel / clutch cover mating locations before taking the clutch cover off, if using old clutch cover again, clutch alignment tool needed. clutch fork bearing easy to get from motor factors or ebay, as is clutch kit. the top bolt on the bell housing is a pig to get at above the starter motor area, I thought I was going to have to drop the engine mounts out at one stage but got there in the end with bleeding knuckles. you will probably need a new gear box mounting rubber as well (maybe) easier to unbolt the cross member and not touch the mount if it looks dodgey. good idea to change gear box oil and do oil seals each end of the box and the speedo drive seals if they are leaking, while the box is out of the car. good luck mating it all back up, I have never found that particularly easy water into the rear footwells is a worry, I would be wanting to get that fixed ASAP, does the car have a sun roof? have you checked the wire connection at the fuel tank? again wiring on these cars getting old now. zublet
Thanks for the replies chaps (i'll be sorrting my club membership out ASAP) opelmantagsi - Yes it does have a sunroof, and it has looked a bit damp around that area.. could be the problem I guess, might have to located a new seal. Im going to change all of the oils (Diff/ engine/ gearbox etc..) also I'll probably try and free the fan off before I try looking for a replacement I'll always try and save these things if possible! Just bought a complete clutch kit off ebay for about £50! includes the clutch assembly, thrust bearing and all the trimmings rather pleased with that. opelmantagsi
sun roofs in these are a big problem, there is a foam above the head lining that acts like a sponge and causes lots of corrosion in the roof, extends from front of sun roof to tail gate down each side, watch for bubbles in the roof where the rails are. there is also a drain hose that runs down the front pillar, check to make sure its clear with a wire fed through the pipe. sun roof seals are hard to find, you will need to get into the members area for more on that so worth joining up at least as a web member
zublet
Its not a sliding sun roof, its like a 'moon roof' that just pops up, there are no bubbles in the roof Trying to get a membership as we speak!
Irmscher Man
It's probably worth checking the seals in the rear quarter windows too, these can leak and cause damp in the rear footwells - especially in the rain we have been having. The instruments can give bad readings when the voltage stabiliser is on the way out. This is located on the back of the instrument cluster, so it is a job to do with the cluster pulled out. You will need to release the speedo cable from the back of the cluster to pull it out. Voltage stabilisers can be tricky to find but they turn up from time to time. Manta, cavalier, Ascona, chevette - they all fit.
zublet
Thanks, I'll check both of these when I get the chance!
opelmantagsi
I have a thread going in the members section on volt stabilizer here is what I said there anyone fitted one of these? http://cgi.ebay.co.u...#ht_1639wt_1140 I have also heard the voltage stabilizer out of the early Calibra / Vectra is solid state and a decent upgrade looking to replace mine before I put the car back together
