Stev0
Greetings, a friend of mine is installing a C20XE into his Manta A but he's having difficulty with fitting it as the sump gets in the way of the rest of the car and he can't get the motor in... Has anybody else experienced this problem? if so, please advise how to go about solving the issues with the sump. thanks
Jason_d
You need to find a manta big wing sump, getting pretty hard to find now.
Stev0
by that i'm assuming you're refering to the manta B... as the A's never had family II motors from the factory... do you have pics?? is there another way?
spiney_norman
Yep, you either want a sump from a Manta B 1.8, or you'll have to cut and weld yours to fit!
monzta
B series sumps are identical to the A series one. So as written above, you need one from a 1,8 Manta B series car. Otherwise welding one is an option, and if doing so make sure that you give it plenty of volume, and make those plates while you are at it. Don´t know what they are called in English but a direct translation is "wave-stoppers" Makes sure the oil doesnt end up in only one side of the sump when going at it one the roads, or on a track
Stev0
B series sumps are identical to the A series one. But is the sump flange and bolt pattern the same for CIH and OHC motors?? because none of the A's came out with the OHC type motors, and my mate wants to fit that (C20XE lump is the same as the OHC 8v's)... I know their bellhousing bolt pattern is NOT the same, not sure about the sump but i doubt it.. So welding is basically the only way? i suppose he also needs to watch out for removing too much oil capacity from the sump while doing so.. Don´t know what they are called in English but a direct translation is "wave-stoppers". they're called "baffle plates" stops the oil sloshing around the sump (and away from the pickup) around corners and under acceleration/braking.. monzta
Manta B 1,8 is a OHC mate not a CIH, so will fit directly in as fitment around the front member of the A and B series cars are identical So best choice would definatly be a Manta B 1,8 sump. andyc
If your fitting a 16v C20XE to the A series then you either need a B Series 1.8s Alloy sump or make a sump using an old OHC Sump, forget about the CIH sumps. Will also need a Gearbox from a 1.8s as well.as the CIH box will not fit the C20XE Andy
Stev0
thanks andy and monzta, yeah he's got an R25 box to go with the motor, but the gearbox is huge and doesn't fit into the tunnel so nicely... were there any getrag RWD gearboxes with the OHC bellhousing pattern that fit into the tunnel nicely? later rekord models perhaps? andyc
Yes you will need a gear box from a 1.8s as this is the same size as the CIH box but with a different bellhousing pattern to fit the OHC engine Andy
monzta
It will still be a tight fit though and you will have to change the console for the interior as the gearleaver will be placed further back inside the car
Stev0
monzta i hear you can modify the gearbox so that the gearstick still comes through the same hole: http://tekenaar.opelgt.com/getrag/getrag_240_mods.htm i'm thinking maybe its a good idea to have the shorter gear level further back, modifying the centre console isn't so bad, but i'll cross that bridge when i get to it.. 399Road
He'll probably need to get an Exhaust manifold custom made too, as the RWD Escort and Manta 16V conversion Manifolds won't fit an A.series car. The Manta A's front Anti roll bar runs behind the cross member and gets in the way of the usual 16V conversion Manifolds.
