conaero
Guys, before I go have a look at the book, can you tell me what is the procedure for swapping my hydraulic lifters for solid ones? Obviously I have to set up the valve clearance but taking the rockers off etc???? It's a 1.9 CIH 8v engine. lamchop77
Just takr the rockers off, remove the lifters and replace with the solid ones. Then set tappet clearances. I assume this is because of a cam swap? Be aware that the ramp profiles on the cam are different for solid lifter cams than hydraulic ones. hth Chris
conaero
Thanks Chris. Can you just explain in more detail about the cam ramp thing, I am a little confused?
lamchop77
The grind of the cam is slightly different, IIRC its less aggressive for the hydraulic type. It probably will not be noticeable when driving. Chris

cam.in.head
if the cam thats fitted is a correct 1.9 item the followers will be solid type anyway now. only the 2.0 & above were hydraulic.
Stev0
if the cam thats fitted is a correct 1.9 item the followers will be solid type anyway now. only the 2.0 & above were hydraulic. I disagree, I have three 1.9's and all of them are hydraulic..
611
I thought in the maual it said that european would be solid and the US ones hydraulic? I might be wrong. My 1.9 ones were solid.
cam.in.head
according to my dealer parts book all 1.6 & 1.9 are solid. thats not to say that your engine has still got its original cam.early cams were a wear point anyway thats why they modified the later 2 litre ones to a different material/hardening . also if you fit solid tappets to replace hydraulic ones you never seem to get a silent system anymore.& if you fit hydraulic to replace solid you get a super guiet but rough tickover engine.this is to do with the cam profile.i beleive solid grinds have a very slight clearance take up before they open the valve. i would also imagine that 1.9 cams are harder to find than 2 litre ones especially.so many 1.9 `s may have been replaced with 2 litre ones & hydraulic lifters. who knows. ????
