Kr1s
Hi all I'm pleased to report that my (was my Dad's) Manta, a 1980, 2.0 SR Berlinetta finally arrived at my home today. It's taxed and insured, so I risked a run down to the shops and back - a whopping half mile or so in total! It's due in the garage for a full check over the week after next, but what I've noticed is that it's quite difficult to find gears, with large movement of the lever being required. Is this normal and if not, any clues as to the cause? As always, thanks in advance. On a different subject, anyone from here going to be at the Basingstoke transport festival on Sunday? Cheers! Jessopia74
Well grats on getting it back. Guess it could be wear, the 4speed has a few links, so small wear in each one would give that feeling
Sutty2006
The 4 speed typically has a longer throw than the 5 speed. As Jessopia says, it has some long rods down the side of the gearbox and they go into the side of the box. Get someone to select the gears while you’re underneath and see if any of the joints are loose/have play. Also are you struggling to get gears while engine is running, off, or both?
Kr1s
Ooh, that's great news to learn that the linkages are outside the 'box! I can check that fairly easily. Didn't really have difficult engaging the gears - just finding them! Doesn't seem to be affected by whether it's running or not. Wear would be surprising as it's only done 28k or thereabouts - I'm wondering about any degraded plastic parts as it's been standing for most of the last 30 years though. Thanks again! Sutty2006
And something may be loose, always worth a look over 👍
Kr1s
Update: At least one of the linkages is very loose - it seems the pivots have nylon(?) bushes and they have disintegrated. Many thanks for the steer on the linkages! I suspect now I'm going to have to do some dismantling, work out the original dimensions of the bushes and get some made. If anyone has been through this and can share any hints/tips, they would be much appreciated! Oh, it also looks like there's an oil leak unless that's all dripping from the sump plug 😔 Cheers!
