Depends on hydraulic or solid lifters, if solid as above, if hydraulic set while running and get oily

manta400john
thanks for that lads didnt know you could set them when running A cih cam cover cut so as it just covers the timing chain is a good idea. Remember when I was an apprentice doing nova's and astra's when running.....takes a bit o getting used to. (Bloody hell that was 20 year ago ) John. mantadoc
thanks for that lads didnt know you could set them when running Hydraulics you pretty much have to, solids should be done not running with feelers gauges, by ear on solids is only really for when everything is worn out. We done solids running, with feeler guages and this was a main dealer(back in the day!) Can't recall any Mantas or Asconas but with the ohv engines this was the norm. Time was of the essence which is probably the reason why we done it this way.....then it was the dwell machine to set the points before checking the CO and idle. Those were the days, and the grand weekly wage of £35 John.
Brown Job
You don't need to go cutting a good rocker cover. For a one-off job setting tappets, make up a cardboard rockerbox-shaped shield with decent corrugated and some duck tape. Will last quite long enough to do the adjustment and you can chop more off/add a bit on easily if you don't get the fit right first time. Be "years" before the tappets need doing again, just make another cardboard thing up then! BJ Edited March 11, 2010 by Brown Job
