399Road Posted January 27, 2012 Share Posted January 27, 2012 OK, not a question, as I've had this on my old GTE a few years ago and have been putting up with the same thing on the Ascona for about a year now. If I switched my heated rear window on , then everything was ok for a few seconds and then the battery light would start glowing and get brighter with engine revs. This seemed to be worse if the weather was damp and you ended up either having only the windscreen demister or the heated rear window on at one time. I cleaned up the earth for the HRW and replaced the switch but it was still the same. In the end I've cut the B+( Battery Positive ) terminal off the Alternator's wiring and refastened it with a new terminal to the Alternator. Now it's perfect, so I thought I'd share this on here in case anyone elses Manta had this similar annoying fault. mantadoc Posted January 27, 2012 Share Posted January 27, 2012 If you have the older Rallye 6 clock dash that used the same type of gauge as the oil gauge, not a cheap slow bi-metallic strip one like the later dashes you see the volt drop as soon as you flick the switch. cam.in.head Posted January 29, 2012 Share Posted January 29, 2012 yes & you can also get this symptom if the main 12v supply wire to the car fusebox/ign switch has a bad connection (6mm wire on large starter terminal along with main pos battery lead)if this lug is not perfect then the alternator output voltage will be much higher than the rest of the voltage in the car & cause the ign lamp to glow(brighter as more things are switched on) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

BoXXerRACE Posted January 30, 2012 Share Posted January 30, 2012 the car needs a full re-wire (amongst other things) once i have a garage to do it all in and a little jimny to replace it as my daily driver. so i'm not too bothered about haunted gages at the mo, as long as she keeps trooping on until i can retire her for a full rebuild.
