Autocrosser
Just thought I'd ask advice on the best way to remove the front and rear screens from a coupe. In the past I've just cut the rubber with an angled removal tool but is it possible to remove them without destroying the rubber or screen? Any advice appreciated. Kevin Abbott
Don't cut the rubber unless its knackered. The rubbers are getting hard to get hold of. Take out the expansion strips and comers from the middle of the rubbers outside the car. From the inside of the car with 2 flat wide screwdrivers feed the rubber under and out of the window surround from the top middle. Continue to the corners. Work down each side. Gently push out corners of the rubbers. Pull the screen with rubber from the bottom of the window surround. Do not use washing up liquid on the rubber when you put it back in as its laden with salt and will help rot the window surrounds.
Autocrosser
Thanks for that Kevin that's exactly the info I was looking for. I didn't know that about washing up liquid and I bet many club members didn't either. I've not had anything to do with screens since I tried 3 times to put a manta screen in my mk1 cavalier saloon 20 years ago!! FYI it doesn't fit but back then parts were plentiful and cheap as chips. andyc
I found that Tyre Soap is great for re-fitting, ask at your local tyre fitters for a lump Andy
Autocrosser
Thanks for that tip Andy. Got the screens out last night and the 2 screwdriver method worked a treat and I think the back windows original so hasn't been out for 30 odd years
Rick-Manta
Every windscreen and back window that I've removed I've never needed to cut the rubber. I bought a 'VW bus' window fitting kit which was basically a handle with a long bit of paracord on it, a diamond shaped wire ended thingy which helps put the locking strip back in and a very useful plastic window seal removal tool. Only the latter I still have.. It was very handy for removing and refitting manta windows back when I had my own Manta lock-up and yard.
