Hi,

Standard 20XE in manta, just started to pink badly at 2500 rpm under load with part throttle, it even does it when reved to 2500 in neutral, could a defective knock sensor cause this, I assume the ignition is too for advanced ?  any ideas ?

Did you have the Diagnostic plug amd EML wired in when the engine was fitted?. If so you could plug in any any type of code reader of Tech1 and it will give you a better idea of whats going wrong.

If not then it may be a case of throwing parts at it until its fixed

Cheers

Andy

If it didnt do it before and now does either a sensor has gone down or possibly the fuel you last filled up with was a lower octane than normal (or contaminated with water etc. Weaking the mix)

You can connect up an engine warning light easily even if you don't have the full diagnostic plug.

Then you can check for error codes.

The way I do this on XEs is You take pin 22 from ecu Brown/Blue and connect to a lamp, the other side of the lamp goes to an ignition live

This will give you the normal engine warning lamp functions. It will light when the ignition is on and go out when the engine runs.It will also light if there is a stored error code.

Then you connect pin 13 Brown/Yellow to a switch and the other side to earth.

When you flick the switch it connects pin 13 to earth and the ecu enters diagnostic mode.

The lamp will then flash morse code style any error codes.

Couple of things to note.

Don't use an led lamp, the lack of resistance can cause it to always be lit.

The first number is to say its in diagnostic mode (13 from memory), all numbers are repeated 3 times, and if you dont have the engine running the crank sensor will show as faulty sometimes as its not getting a signal.

When it gets to the end of the list it flashes 13 again
