Denis K
I have been getting different info on this. Some people use atf and others 75w90. What is the actual correct oil or these boxes? Cheers

mantasrme
As Andy says there is a specific vauxhall oil for the getrag boxes. Don't have the part number to hand but it's on this forum somewhere. If your just topping up, and you're sure the box is still on vaux oil thats the way to go as it doesn't like mixing with other types of oil. If you're draining it and starting from fresh then you can use any good quality semi or fully synthetic oil of the right grade. The box will then change as smoothly as when it was new. Rick-Manta
Some people do use ATF as well, it'll do the job but would require changing more frequently (than every 20 years with the usual! :-D ) Personally, I use the castrol 75w/90, the only reason you won't find that grade/type specified is that gear/axle oil wasn't available as a synthetic multigrade when the cars were contemporary. Top tips, loosen the filler plug before draining (incase you can't budge it), feed a metre of garden hose from the engine bay to the filler hole, there's even a loop on the box that you can cable tie the pipe to. It makes it easy to fill from standing up and not having to squeeze the bottle of oil into the box via difficult access.
