Hi all I know this is a long shot but does anybody have a working phillips 400 radio cassette player?. It's the one with the old push buttons on the front the one I brought recently is dead. I brought this for young jack he wants to keep his b reg manta as original as possible.

When this topic popped up a little while ago I posted that I thought the correct radio was a Phillips 752.

Are you asking for one of these or are you asking for one of these ? :

Which is not correct.

Hi Paul, it seems my friend has beaten me to it and posted a wanted ad before I had the chance myself! :) The Philips 752 was on the later Mantas and mine is an early GT/E. Never seen that modern looking Philips 400 that is on Ebay as that is the wrong one. The 752 requires coding but the one that would have originally been fitted to my GT/E didnt stick out as much as the 752 and was before coding. The good news is that I dont have to worry about not having a code when buying a used one. It has been such a long struggle today with my Manta but my friend has put about 15 hours into my radio making a facia and making the mounting clips for it as the one he got me didnt come with them. After a long slog and struggle and all the wires connected up properly to the back of the radio/cassette and making sure it has live it still doesnt work and when I mean it doesnt work I mean it is completely dead? Only thing I can suggest is that we test it outside of the car on its own to double check it is dead and it isnt my wiring. There is a note on top of the Philips 400 when it arrived saying when he had tested both the radio and cassette, he also dated when he tested it, he said it was working fine. It looks immaculate and if all else fails and it doesnt work on its own I willl go down the route of finding somebody to repair it.

Jack,

What year is your GTE ?

With regard to the wiring, the radio takes its feed from an auxiliary location under the fuse box, the same little wiring spur runs the ciggy lighter and the clock.  It might be an idea to make sure you have the 12v and the earth present before you continue.

Mine is a 1984 on a B plate with the Daytona Check interior. We have tested the radio on its own and it lit up for a second and then died again. So maybe its the on/off knob? We are ringing up somewhere tomorrow who may have a chance in fixing it because since it lit up briefely it is obviously working which is good news but something is wrong with it as it acts like it is on a very loose connection somewhere. When we first wired it up to the Manta all the wiring was all correct as I found out you cant wire it up wrong. We even tested the live wire and the radio was recieving live and we figured out that it is still the Original live wire :)

I think the correct one is the slightly earlier Phillips LW/MW push button radio with stereo cassette.

Personally I would go with a 752 case it's a better unit. The pic Paul posted is one of the earlier design ones which would be best for the period.

I am definately keeping it Original and putting the Original 400 back in there, it is period correct for the Manta I have and I dont have to worry about finding the code for it. I have never had a radio in mine and what better way to feel nostalgic than to put the radio in that my Manta came with from the factory. ;)
